You say the the noise went with the belt off but came back with the belt refitted. I would go one step further and remove the crankshaft pulley/damper and have a listen to it and a good look at it.
I've seen a few pulleys which have broken up on the back face and caused a tapping against the front timing cover.
The chain has no routine replacement interval, but, should it fail it'll take out the head. Very rare to see a FWD with a chain fault though tbh.
On another note....are you sure it's from that area?
A defective injection point timing solenoid can give a metallic crack to the engine when under load.
