Hi all
New to this forum hope you can help. I have a 280 SWB transit 2.0 TD 100PS diesel 2000 MY. I have a horrible metallic rattle around crank shaft pulley/ alternator area. I removed the alternator belt which incidently only runs from crank shaft pulley to alternator on this engine and the noise dissapeared so thought the bearing had gone in the alternator. Have just fitted a new alternator and belt but guess what yep the noise is still there. Can't beleive it, does anybody know of any probs re timing chain etc or any ideas as to what the noise could be engine has only done 65,000 miles I am worried of doing lots of damage if I still drive it. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance

Yep sounds like the cam chain, I believe there was a recall for this.

Any more info on this MR M is it the chain itself could I do more damage driving it.

engine rattle

hi
iv"e got an 02 280 and its had a rattle like that since i got it 12 mths ago,I also think its the timeing chain,it rattles on acceleration, but not so noticeable when cruseing, dont know how serious that is, but its been like that for 12 mths.Does anyone know the cost of getting it repaired

Does anybody know if the cam chain requires routine replacement ? If so at what milage ?

The rattle as I described earlier on mine as got worse I've now got the ratlle just on idle now, its a horrible noise thats why I wanted to know if I am doing any other damage by driving it, the problem I have is we have just sold our family car to get a bigger one so its the only vehicle we have at the mo its always the way isn't it.

Problem is, being a bank hol, the people who can give advice are probley away for the weekend, normally its a fast responce,but my guess is its a timeing chain or tensioner problem, its got me worried now but unless something breaks,just might get away with it for a short while.

The recall on the timing chains didn't affect FWD engines, but a few early powerunits did have a recall on the oil pump chain.

I doubt if it's a chain issue tbh.

You say the the noise went with the belt off but came back with the belt refitted. I would go one step further and remove the crankshaft pulley/damper and have a listen to it and a good look at it.

I've seen a few pulleys which have broken up on the back face and caused a tapping against the front timing cover.

The chain has no routine replacement interval, but, should it fail it'll take out the head. Very rare to see a FWD with a chain fault though tbh.



On another note....are you sure it's from that area?

A defective injection point timing solenoid can give a metallic crack to the engine when under load.

good advice - you've eliminated all but the alternator drive when you took the belt off - my money is on the pulley as well - on some of the french motors the pullies break up to the point where the inside turns and the outside stays still - peugeot/citreon HDI's being the worst culprit

Absolutely....

"Cam belt every 78,000miles' or whenever your manky crankshaft pulley needs replacing, so actually every 30,000miles....Crafty Barstewards :twisted:

@Nighthawk.. What sort of price are the pulleys? are they ridiculously expensive like the French ones?

Nah, they were quite cheap as it's only a pressed steel and rubber affair.

The belt should be changed again too, if following the book as it's a "stretchy" belt

Can you actually see that the pulley is broken up by looking at it or does it have to be removed. Can you actually see it hitting the timing cover with engine running. The pulley on mine has 3off 15mm head bolts in it.
Can I just remove the pulley if so how do I stop the pulley from turning to take it off. Cheers
