depends where you live as a Di transit will start in freezing conditions..A lot of cold start problems are from duff batterys and bad connections or dieing starter motors...I have not had a bad starting Di even one that used a lot of oil and smoked a lot still started up ok.....mk6 and mk7 have glow plugs but mainly for emmisions on cold starts as they will start no problem without them connected up..

if it is the 2.0 that you are going for then get the 125 bhp tdci they start the best. (i pulled the relay out 3yrs ago) and not even this winters -o temp made any diffrence. :D

Mines a 2litre 2002 85ps with a 120000 on and up until recently the glow plugs wernt even connected and it started first click of the key even in the snow and ice, to top it all off the battery is well past it's prime.
Ive re-connected 2 of them now and its just made it a bit smoother when i first pulled off in the morning, otherwise no difference, the other 2 are just bolts after the plugs snapped. so i dont realy understand the point of them if they dont seem make any odds :?
Any one know what they do emmision wise?

they help stop the puff of black smoke in the morning and reduce i think its NOX levels on start up.

That'll be why theres a black patch forming on the drive behind the van then.
Is it likely to fail an MOT with those raised levels?

no makes no diffrence to mot as the engine will be tested when hot and not from a cold start up..
