which engine/fuel pump for veg oil

I am thinking of buying a transit and converting it to run on new veg oil, information so far is that I need a model with a Bosch fuel pump and without an internal tank pump. Any help would be appreciated, does anybody have experience with this pro's and con's, model type and age?

I used to use SVO in my 98 R Reg with a Bosch pump never had a problem don't anymore as its more expensive than diesel

You do not say which model of Transit you intend to use, but I would not recommend running a MK6 or MK7 on home-made veg oil. The MK5 seems OK and the Bosch pump seems better than the Lucas.

Try using the search facility on this site and you will get lots of advice and reports from folk who have tried various methods of using home made diesel.

What you need is mk3-mk5 di with bosch fuel pump or turbo but you'll need to change lucas pump for bosch. Don't be tempted to just chuck veggie oil straight in the main tank, get a second tank, water to fuel heat exchanger, heated fuel filter head (find an old peugeot at the breakers) and solenoid changover valves for the feed and return pipes. Direct injection diesels are far more critical on needing two tank setup than the old indirect old peugeots and vw's etc and from experiance (i'm become an expert on changing diesel pumps) i can tell you its only worth doing if your going to do it properly. You always need to warmup and shutdown on diesel. Where are you???, if you get the gear together i'd give you a hand if not too far. Good luck Matt

Just to add its not viable financially to use fresh oil and if you collecting used oil you'll need a garage or shed to filter, store etc.. i can tell you that women are strange creatures and get upset when dirty veggie oil leaks all over the hallway carpet

i get new oil at £0.80 / l , i think thats viable

Went to Makro earlier and couldn't beleive £14.19 for 20L KTC veg oil. 72ppl . Was going to wait till i've set up a 2 tank system which despite what others are saying i still think is probably needed on a Di lump but at that price i picked up 40L chucked it in and added 4L unleaded to thin which also ofsets the slight power loss on svo. Running pukka

hi all, i've been running my 2.5di for two yrs on wvo(waste veg oil) i've ironed out (i reckon) all teething problems. i run a two tank system (6 gallon tank for wvo under bonnet )i built my own heat exchanger etc and used manual valves for switch over. if you want to see more go to wildcamping for motorhomes and look me up under titles such as veg oil which is running at moment theres photos of my engine set-up and plenty of discussion on waste veg oil/svo(straight veg oil )and biodiesel.

as far as i'm concerned pretty much any pump can run wvo so long as the engines hot, and the oil is hot!the problem occurs when oil is cold its thicker than diesel and the pump works harder to pump through injectors.

hi n8rbos, what teething probs did you have? was it before you twin tanked? were you using straight veggie, used or mixed with diesel, petrol etc?

biggest problem was getting oil to ideal viscosity.so i built an heat exchanger on the flow pipe(veg oil), this did ok but not absolutely brill, so i added a heat exchanger on the return pipe (veg oil)great. but the problem was on a cold day the oil in the tank was probably 2/3 times thicker than diesel. so i incorporated a copper coil in the tank feed with coolant from the heat exchangers, oil in tank warms a lot quicker so i can switch to veg quicker thus using less diesel:) other problem was in-line filter waxing up (paper element) solved problem by using a mesh inline filter and filtering veg oil down to 1micron instead of 5micron.

be sure to look at the above site i put save me re-writing everything and the pictures are pretty self-explanatory, any further info you or peeps off here require give me a shout.

ps, be sure to filter your waste veg oil to 1micron, change engine oil twice as regular as now and make sure the anti-spill pipe on the flow pipe (diesel) is linked into the return pipe(diesel) and the anti-spill pipe off the injectors goes into the wvo tank.
