Squealing under acceleration

Postby rompom » Tue Apr 06, 2010 2:16 pm

I posted this last week but didn't have much response as I don't think the fault was well described. After a trip to Portsmouth & back I am better acquainted with the sound! It relates to a 1999 Ford Transit 190 with a 2.4 diesel engine (non-turbo).

Under acceleration in all 5 gears there is a screeching noise coming from the LHS of the engine (almost as if it's coming from the glove box). It sounds like a loose fan-belt but only happens when the car is in gear, and accelerating. It also worsens briefly when I take my foot off the gas if the revs stay high and I don't change up. I assume it is not a fan belt as the noise ONLY happens in gear/accelerating, not when I first start the engine from cold. It did not improve over the 100 mile journey over the weekend.

I have read in different forums that it could be the cam belt or auxiliary drive belt. Any opinions here? Are either of these things I could replace with limited knowledge, a decent tool kit and a Haynes manual!?

I'm no expert, but this is what I would do to make sure it's not your alternator/fan belt:

- look at the engine from the top, so you can see the alternator/fan belt nicely lined up. Check that it is straight - ie the alternator is not leaning forward (if that makes sense...) or that the belt is not trying to jump off the alternator pulley.
- grab the alternator by hand and make sure it doesn't "wobble" - i.e that it is solidly attached.
- check you have all three mounting bolts in place and tight

Squeeking noise can come from many things, I only had Transit for a year and twice have I heard the squeek - both times with not very pleasant endings... In my case these squeeks were coming from alternator and were caused by alternator being out of line/not mounted properly and resulting in snapped mounting bolt (the one underneath the alternator). There are pictures on my thread somewhere... That's my pennyworth, I'm sure someone will have more suggestions...
