Cold Start Problem

Postby Moots'r'us » Thu Apr 15, 2010 9:51 am

Hi All

My van is really giving me a headache at the moment. Early in January, the fuel pump died leaving me stuck. Eventually got the pump repaired but have since had an intermittent problem with starting first thing.

Some mornings it will fire up with no problem, and carry on doing so for a week. Then you come out, turn it over and although it initially, for a second sounds like its going to fire up it doesn't. Then, the only way it will go is with a squirt.

Driving me mad as its so un-predictable. Seems worse on colder mornings, so I would have thought glow plugs, but, It was not like it before pump problem and, from what I have read on here, the duratorques don't really need glow plugs anyway?

Anyone got any ideas on what I can try?

Cheers

assume its the 1 in your sig..wont really be glow plugs as a duratorque should start without them..only fitted to help clean up cold starts..A lot of members on here are running there with them disconnected..
Sounds like it could have a air leak in the fuel pipes more than likely at the pump or even the fuel filter..might be a idea to fit a new filter(dont forget to fill with clean diesel before fitting the filter)

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it is w reg Mk6 in the sig.

Did think 'air leak' but thought that would happen consistently rather than being ok for 10 days, then play up for a couple then go back to being ok again and so on?

filter isnt to dear to change and it will rule that out...plus check all the pipe connections...sounds like sometime temperature related so likely a pipe is leaking air into the system at certain outside temeratures
