ford 2.5 td automatic oil change

Postby couta1 » Thu Apr 15, 2010 12:15 pm

hi all..

how do i drain the oil on an automatic gearbox for a ford 2.5 turbo diesel to do a ATF change.??

Also i noticed after driving up a very steep hill or the gearbox got hot ATF fluid leaked out of the breather..?? by the gallon..It hasnt done it again for a while so i suspect when i bought the van the gearbox had been over filled.Could that have been the cause and i hope my box is not going to pack in?.my van has done 91 000 miles

cheers
steven

Messy job and you'll only drain about a gallon of the two that's in there :!:

Large container and remove the transmission sump

Have a new "screen" (filter) oil and sump gasket ready before you start the job

Andy is the screen filter mesh? and could it be clean off with petrol or is it best to replace it?

It probably used to be (once upon a time  )
It's an aluminium casing with what looks like a felt pad inside that does the filtering, so definitely worth changing :!:

Ok I know I'm getting on a bit, just last time I had problems was with an old Granada Automatic and that's what was inside and a guy at the garage told me to wash it out with petrol, helped but didn't cure the fault. So I think that's what I need to buy for mine also. Thanks for the help Andy.
