Fuelling problems?????

Hi Ya!! Heres the story so stick the kettle on...

I have a mk2 Tranny but a mk3 engine in her. Believe to be the first of the Di's? The engine has a self priming hand pump on the filter on the left hand side of the block.

The problem I have is... I bought her as a non runner and she had an electronic pump on her. So the set up was Tank to electronic pump to self priming pump then just as normal onwards. The guy said it had blowin the return valve plastic caps off. He said all it needed was a new self priming pump and new rubbers on top of the injectors she'd run.

Replaced the priming pump but checked it first and it was ok... but replaced it anyways. Took the electric pump off and sorted the rubbers on the injectors. Tried to turn it over but battery was flat, so bought a one for her a heavy duty one and tried to start her. Odd times she start but cut out. So took the rod and spring out of the fuel solenoid. still wouldn't properly. 9 times out of ten she wouldn't run after the key was turned and if she did it was for 3 seconds max. checked if fuel was getting throu and it was? bleed the system, still would not start. Spoke to a lad and he said it was fuel starvation. Checked everything again and even changed injectors. Still nothing.

So.... I put the electronic pump back on (I know they don't need one but this tranny seems it does. ) Soon as I fitted the electronic pump on shes well away. Hasn't blowing a cap off or anything. She works a treat.

But does anyone know why it is that it'll only work with a electric fuel pump cos it's got my had battered

I spoke to a diesel fitter and he said I may have the wrong type mechanical injector pump?? He said on the ealry di's they stucked the diesel throu compared to the newer type??

yes early Di had no lift pump only injectors pump

So the early di's, did the mechanical injector pump help suck the fuel up once the system was primed with the hand primer? To be honest, I'm really confused with this engine It seems as if there isn't enought fuel getting through the system, only when the electric pump is on and runnin will the engine work. There seems to be no air leaks or locks because the engine runs fine with the electrcal pump, I've heard also that the hand pump primer like mine sometimes leaks the pressure in the system once primed??

Yes injector pump sucked up the fuel once primed, so no need for lift pump, Hand primers do fail with age and allow air into the system

cheers ake! I think I may know what my problem may be now. The injector pump.

Reason being, I went to the scrap yard for a new primer pump. While Me and my dad were takin the hand primer pump off we looked at the the mechanical injector pump and it looked different from the one on my truck. The lad who worked there said the tranny which we were takin the part off was a great runner. I think it may be that then if the older ones sucked compared to the newer type which I think i have.
