Transplant of Cologne V6 (2.8 0r 2.9) into a 1991 Transit. what is the 'easiest' route to follow. has anyone done it already? Does anyone know anyone who has? :-) thanks in advance

Hi dipstick welcome :D

Ive not done it but ive looked into it! Ive a feeling you will need an adapterplate to use your existing mt75 gearbox also new flywheel to fit! as this will move the starter out!

The way i was going to do it was use sierra xr4 type 9 with transit gearstick and xr4 bell housing but this way you will have to keep the smaller flywheel! and the type9 is considered a weaker box than the mt75!

other than that you will need some engine mountings or make some up as 2.8/2.9 transits are pritty rare! aslo the exhaust would need to be modified!

It will fit in and would be a great van! let us know how you get on!!

2.8 is easyer as you can go carb 2.9 only came with injection so you'll need tank mods (possably), a high pressure pump/lines and a small sub loom/ECU fitting (easy).
the box is the hardest, try to find a 2.9 manual ambulance and rob the lot, 2wd MT boxes are like hens teeth but you can get one made up from the front half of a V6 4X4 MT box with the rear end of a 4pot 2WD MT box, more expencive/complicated but will last a lot lot longer than a type 9.
If you go the type 9 route as stated above you have to use a V6 box (capri or Xr4i) as the V6 box has a longer input shaft that reaches the spigot bearing in the crank, 4 pot boxes have a shorter input shaft and it wont last long floating about with no support.
The XR4i boxes have larger input shaft bearing so will last longer than a capri box (other wise exactly the same).
The engine mounts are probably still available form Fords as they made the 2.9 up till a few years back, check the SVO parts listings if the dealer cant find the part under the transit section of Microcat.

i think from memory the type 9 has a long mainshaft ,if you bolt a v6 bellhouseing on i think its a inch to long! i have just been offerd a type 9 for my van as there is the odd time that i could do with fith downhill! i know many years ago i had a bellhouseing made to take the v8 and was going to use the type 9 when i put the bellhouseing on ,the mainshaft was to long ,so i put the bellhouseing on the f type 4 speed and it fitted no problem! :?

v6 conversion

You would be saving yourself a lot of time and money by getting an ex-ambulance transit with the 2.9 and manual box already in. I bought one 2 years ago from merthyr motor auctions, one previous owner (the nhs) and paid £600 for it. it was absolutely mint bodily and mechanically,(they are serviced very regularly) by going this route you can simply rob all the parts you need (engine, box, wiring, fuel tank already plumbed for injection etc) and bin the rest. (or stuff a pinto in it and flog it on as a camper)
You would probably spend more than that having to mess about making up gearboxes, engine mounts, swirl chambers etc
