Alternator problems?

Postby mikethebuilder » Mon May 03, 2010 2:48 pm

Hi,
I am hoping that someone can help me with a problem. I have a Ford Transit 260 SWB Bi-Fuel 2295CC 03 registration. I have no previous history with this vehicle. The battery light has come on and I think that there is an alternator problem. The casing of the alternator is all cracked. There is a tensioner on an arm next to the alternator, how does this tensioner work to release the belt and re-tension after fitting a new alternator? It's a seven ribbed belt. Also, I have hunted high and low looking for service manual or similar with absolutely no success, has anyone any ideas where i could locate one? There was absolutely no info. with my vehicle, not even a handbook. Also, how do I find the code for the radio as I presume this will be lost if the battery is disconnected? Can you charge the battery in position, connected up as there seems to be a diagram under the bonnet showing leads, is that just for jump starting? It shows a positive next to the fuse box and a negative above and to the left of the engine.

I would be grateful for any help.

Cheers,

Mike

you can charge battery in situ, radio needs to come out to get model number should begin with an M post model number on here and someone will give you the code ,as for sevice data, haynes do a transit manual but dosnt cover petrol engines, on diesels engine transit there is a jump point under the bonnet dont no about petrol engines if there is you cant miss it it will ave a red plastic cover on it

Odd, my alternator has a cracked casing too..

In fact it's starting to whine like a turbo where i assume it's 'making' charge, although no battery light or issues with starting etc..

I see no reason why you can't charge in situ using the remote points mentioned - the neg/earth is the engine lifting hook off the block.

Thanks guys for your help. I have successfully changed the alternator and all is now functioning well. however, I am still trying to track down a manual so if anyone has any info. I would be grateful. I will whip out my radio at a later date and post the code, better to be prepared! It's great to know there's a forum that's so helpful.

Cheers!

As mentioned, there is no manual for Petrol/Lpg variant, but i've bought a diesel one to assist with interior and other cross over stuff.

Ref the alternator, anything to watch out for, as looking to do mine next week - also what did you pay for unit ? I've found a new 115a (non exchange) unit with 12m g'tee for £115 delivered..
