05 transit 135 350 Rear brakes

Postby scottyr6 » Sun May 09, 2010 2:37 pm

Hi,
How big a job is it to strip the rear brakes and clean them on this transit? there working fine but if it's wet and the van stands for a while the brakes will have bound on and then there pretty noisy squealing for a while until they clean up again!
Thanks Peter!

How long do you leave it standing? All brakes will do it if they stand for a while.

if you leave your van standing for a while leave hanbrake off and in gear...not to bad a job but a bit off a pain, you will need a 65mm socket and big breaker bar,
wheel off/3 flange counter sunk screws out, pull flange out this has a shaft with a spline on it about 2 foot long, flange has a gasket on it,so if your lucky will still stay intack,if not a new gasket will be required, you will lose a slight bit of oil when taking flange off so put a container under hub,...the drums contain the wheel bearings so keep things clean ,the 65mm nut will be peaned over into a tab slot, tap it back up and undo nut ,remove washer, remove out bearing race, and spacer drum will now be free to remove, sometimes they come off easy sometimes not depens on how much drum is worn,
while drums are off check hub seal in drum,if you suspect any wear replace them if they leak your shoes will get soaked in diff oil.
you are supposed to use new 65mm nuts,(very expensive for what they are)and tighten to the required torq, but if nuts are ok(this would be your choice if you decide to reuse them as it is recommended to use new) you could reuse, and tighten them up to the same place, indicated by the place where they where peaned over, the torq for thes nuts is quite high so nut will be very tight when replacing nut take a bit off care clean threads and make sure you dont cross thread it as you dont want to be fitting a new tube,
when replacing flange with shaft on .you may well have to try a couple of different positions to get spline lined up and countersunk holes lined up
check shoes for cracking as these sometimes have a habit of breaking up
if you have to replace seals they are sold seperate, but dealer will have it as a kit,
seal finis no 1521590

I think the Dealer wanted £200 to clean them out on my 90k service on my 135  Which i found a bit strange as they had serviced it from new and it seemed to me that was the first time they had had the drums off

Thanks again angeleye, even leaving the handbrake off if the van sits for a few days they stick on, so time to have a look and see whats going on, the oil that you loose, will the diff need topping back up when you do both brakes or is that minimal I shouldn't worry? I fitted the new leak off pipes on the injectors you put me right on, and has solved the diesel around the injector problem!! :D

no oil loss is minimal so no need to top up,its just whats left round the bearing, have a good luck at shoes for cracks as this could be your problem just done mine and they were cracked all over, all thou there was very little wear on them, and i do service my van regular ,including inspecting brakes, just be aware of what i said about hub nuts, and seals
