2.8i timing

Postby Jim H » Sat May 22, 2010 8:52 pm

Could someone please advise me on how to get the basic timing right on a 2.8i V6 engine? I have removed the distributor whilst doing the head gaskets fully expecting the drive to the strib to be a slot, pin or similar I would like to know which cylinder is number one and are there any marks on the strib for the rotor arm to point at?

Here's Hoping, Jim.

left hand front is number one,set this to TDC then insert your dizzy making sure it is firing on the contacts then attach your plug leads in the correct order of firing ie(1342 etc).

It's took me all this time to get round to doing this job but it's done now :D I would say that number one cylinder is at the front right bank of cylinders. I suppose it depends on what you consider to be left or right IE looking at the car from the front or sat in the drivers seat say

It's usually from standing in front looking at the engine, if i remember correctly the lead for cylinder no 1 should be at the back nearest the bulkhead with the rotor arm pointing to it, there is a diagram in the Haynes book for a mk2 Granada

think im right in saying ,facing engine, left bank front of engine 1 at front, right bank 4 at front ,
firing order 1,4,2,5,3,6
if you want to start from scratch, take rocker cover off left bank,
turn engine over by hand, until inlet rocker on number one, opens, keep turning engine, until no1 piston comes back up to tdc,and crank pulley mark lines up, this will be the firing point for no1,replace distributor, where the rotor is would be lead exit, distributor runs clockwise, finish off with strobe

1 is front left, 4 is front right, 1 on the cap should be at the 12 oclock position looking down on the dizzy from the front of the engine then it runs clockwise 142536.

Just agreeing the 2 above posters, checked it in the factory cortina manual :)
