rear tyres

Postby deansbro2 » Sat Jun 12, 2010 8:28 am

Hi this is my first time posting. I own a ford transit 1990 minibus that we have done a simple conversion to camper.
The van is a petrol motor and I am hunting out ways of making it less thirsty any suggestions I taked to a mechanic who said you can adjust the emitions settings but said it can be a bit risky changing the settings. We have got good power and the van in good condit we drive it slow. This might sound like a silly question but as the van has less weight than intended design is it possible to remove one set of tyres off the back axel as the van has dual tires at the back.
Thanks Hugo

no dont think you can unless you change the rear axle for the single wheel version..you will find the back axle is likely to be the low ratio one so would be better off finding a higher ratio back axle or change the engine for a diesel one.

welcome btw

I dont think there is anything illegal about taking one pair of rear wheels off, however the tyres would have to have an appropriate load rating and you would kill wheel bearings with monotinous regularity

hi you may be best to keep the twin wheel set up for a campervan as they drive off wet grass a lot better and do not get stuck as much .

bet vosa would disagree..vehicles must have the correct amount of tyres and load rating according to the vosa plate(thats on 3501kg and above weights but dont know about vehicles below 3500kg but would say it will knock out the wheel bearings very quickly.)
