Earth strap

can anyone help,

why does the earth strap on the battery have a 'fuse', what purpose does it do? (flat alloy with a plastic box at the back of it)

can i do away with the earth strap and fit a universal one?

Garage told me a new earth strap is expensive, what should i look at paying for one?

The fuse protects the vans electrical systems so yes you do need it.

The fuse is also to protect you, remember you are sitting on top of the batteries, if you were involved in a accident and the starter cable shorted the batteries could explode if the fuselink wasn't there,at the end of the day bodge it if you want but dont come running to me with acid burns on your arse

I'll second that especially as theese vans are prone to starters failing, if one goes short circuit or jams up the enormouse current drawn from the battery, will, at best set fire to the cables and at worst cause the battery acid to litterally boil until they explode and go open circuit.

This fuse has one of the most important jobs out of any of the electrical sytems fuses, and SHOULD NOT BE BYPASSED under any circumstances.

Had many a case on older cars when the starter bendix jammed in, but motor couldnt crank engine.......rushing to remove scalding hot battery leads as fast as spanners wuld allow before someones beloved vheical became an inferno
