ldv/ford gearbox problem

Postby tom_moran » Wed Jun 16, 2010 11:32 am

hi all,

Im in need of your expert advice once again.

Im trying to replace 5th gear on a ldv which has a ford gearbox. Im having trouble getting the gearbox apart, its about half an inch apart and stuck solid. Ive tried to find a circlip everywhere but cant find whats holding it together. Any help is very much appriciated.

Thanks

Tom

Is it an MT75? The 5 speed rear wheel drive box? You have to remove the T40 bolt at the top. The revers light switch. The The detent bolt which is 14mm hex, behind that is a spring, cup and ball. Also the sleeve the spring goes in needs to come out. Remove the reverse idler bolts. Then remove the front trumpet housing. The bit the release bearing rides on. Behind that is a circlip. Remove that. Then make sure its in neutral, remove the casing bolts and the cases will part. :D

Never seen anyone do these without the specialist tools. The boxes take some pulling apart, if you dont use the correct tools you run the risk of damaging the mating faces of the case.

thanks mastertech, thats really helpful. Ill have a crack at getting it open again tomorrow, id removed most of the bits you listed but missed a few.

I wanted to fix the any rather than scrap it as its so wasteful, but i may end up having to replace it if its dead. Where would the best place be to pick one up?
