transit 51 - SWB - can't get it into gear

Postby ryan2010 » Tue Jul 20, 2010 9:50 pm

Hi All,

I can't get it into gear. It was working fine today, but, when i put it into reverse which I had to force. I managed to park up but, had a look at it later and now the clutch pedal is half way down to the floor - turned the engine over depressed clutch but won't go into gear at all. It has been a bit suspect putting it into first over the last couple of days.. I thought it may have been the gear linkage, any suggestions to what it is?

Thanks,
Ryan

Clutch pedal sticking half way down normally means the master cylinder is knackard..

if it will go into gear with the engine not running then all is ok gear selection wise....if by how you mean the clutch pedal has no feel and goes straight to the floor you got a leak somewhere most likely to be slave cylinder in the gearbox..but first check the fluid leval..
and h7th if you only sprayed wd40 then the linkage will seize up again soon as wd40 is not a lubricante so you may want to oil up the linkage whice will stop it seizeing in the future..

Thanks for your replies.

There is no trace of oil near the clutch pedal so does that suggest the master cylinder is OK?

The actual position of the pedal is down, I can move the pedal freely with my hand but does return back to the floor once let go.

With the engine cut it does freely go into any gear hence the only way to move is to turn the engine on while in gear. I have phoned around a few garages and they also say that it is likely to be the slave cylinder. I have had quotes of £340 up to over £600 to rectify (including new clutch) under the assumption that this is the problem. I have seen prices of the part (slave cylinder) from £40 to £180 does anyone know the real price for this part?

Thanks,
Ryan
