CAMBELT ON STILL GOT PROBLEMS

Postby GSXR » Sat Jul 24, 2010 11:47 am

I have been so grateful for the detailed photos and explanations of the cambelt change topics on here.

I had the misfortune of breaking down on the way home from Snetterton towing a caravan, the cambelt broke. One rocker broken and seven bent rods....

Okay so far I have replaced the cambelt, rocker arm, water pump, fanbelt, tensioner and three of the rods (dealer only had three so tried to straighten others)

I have rebuilt top and it runs BUT so badly, smokes like a train......I have done all the clearances...if it was petrol I would definitely say the timing was out so it seems like I have gone wrong somewhere or there is more damage than I thought, can the valves be damaged?

What I did find was when aligning the engine the pin went into the flywheel fine(all way through) and the other two were 'okayish' as well BUT how do you determine the pump or the camshaft are not 180 degrees out? The holes line up every rotation on the pump or is that because it does not matter? Also on one of the threads it states undo the pump bolts and re-tighten them, which pump bolts? little confused about that.....

Anyway I might strip it all down again and start from scratch as the timing cannot be right as it runs so bad, could it be the tappet adjustment not right? Could it be the not so straight rods? I have done two or three petrol engined cars and did those okay this is worrying me to be honest....

Any help greatly appreciated.....

Okay after posting that I went out to garage to go over it all again, I decided to start from scratch, to cut a long story short the holes in the injector pump DO NOT line up 100% when the other two holes are lined up exactly the cog on the pump holes are slightly out to the left. Anyway I moved the cog so it was one tooth over so the holes now don't line up to the right....The old girl runs so much better, I started it without any belt/rad/etc on for about three seconds but it started perfectly and for those few seconds ran fine.....now to finish putting it together....

Transit has only done 72000 miles its a P reg aswell......BT Supervisor/Manager van I guess.....

Thanks to all those pictures and posts on this subject....Appreciate them.....

on the pulley for the fuel pump is 3 bolts they are to adjust the pulley so the timing pin goes in thats when its timed up correctly.

Thanks for that - I am guessing that's why mine was slightly out...Now its back to how it should be I will remember that and if I need to have it apart again I will mark it up and adjust those holes so they are exact....

Thanks for the help.....

do not mistake the holes in the flywheel, only one will go right through (that is the right one)
