Recon g/box ratio nothing like original!

Postby duettodave » Mon Sep 13, 2010 6:00 pm

I have had a '97 100D LWB Autosleepers Duetto for 2 years. A TB Turbos (Lancaster) turbo + intercooler was fitted in 2000 making it 140bhp. It has amazing power & torque BUT this has over 42k proved too much for the gearbox bearings and they began to rumble.
I took it to the small garage who has serviced it for last 7 years and had a recon g/b + clutch fitted via a reconditioner. This is nowhere near the same box!!! Mine cruised at 80+ in 5th & up the side of a house in 4th. New one 65 max and revving much harder.Drinking fuel.
Can anyone please tell me what gearbox I had before. Does 4.56 ratio mean anything?
Would Ford be able to tell me from the log book. Garage has been told by geabox reconditioners that they are all the same! Please tell me they're not.
Thanks

gearbox has nothing to do with cruising speed..thats only changable by changing the rear axle..the 4.56 is the rear diff ratio which is best for cruising..post up your reg number and someone will check ETIS site for you as it gives all details of your van....How did they come to the figure of 140hp just by changing the turbo and intercooler??

I reckon thats the answer as well, as all MT75 boxes have the same 4th and 5th gear ratios :D

139BHP is a bit optimistic, the Turbo Intercooled factory Di's produced 115ps, a 30ps increase over the standard Turbo Di :?

Thanks for that.
So can you help me as to why the vehicle is nothing like when I dropped it off at 9.00am and got it back at 5.00 pm?
It did have a screech when I drove it a bout 2 miles towards home.Took it straight back and it was identifed as the rearmost propshaft bearing which was silent up to the g/b change. Replaced following day with genuine Ford bearing @ £73.00 + vat + labour. Until this moment I have not linked these 2 incidents together.
Are they linked in any way?
Thanks

Hi all again.
All I can say is that on the same long hill on the A55 that we use regularly in the camper @ 70mph almost to the top if not baulked by anything, I was flat out @ 55mph in 3rd and had to be flashed in to lane 1 by an artic to get me out of lane 2 and out of trouble! My wife says she wont go away in it again as I'm in such a foul temper with it.I used to go out in it just to blow people away! Sorry to moan but it's really doing me in!

Juice green must be the primer coat. All Autosleepers are finished in Ford Ivory White. THANK GOD!

That sounds more like the engine is at fault not the gearing.

Engine is more eager to accelerate than the original box. That's what has been making me think that the ratios must be lower to give better lower end performance at the expense of top end.
I will go back to dealer in the morning and discuss the speedo theory.

Thanks to you all for taking time to read & write back.

If you are having to drop down to third on a hill and be over taken by lorries then it's the engine not the box.

bet a turbo boost pipe has a split in it.
also i think that figure for the power is a torque figure not bhp....
