Parking sensors on metal rear bumper

Postby Fatbaldhobbit » Wed Dec 01, 2010 8:48 pm

I have acquired a set of parking sensors but on reading the instructions it says not suitable for metal bumpers.
A quick google search has suggested rubber washers between the brackets and bumper will help but has anyone got any thoughts on this?

There will obviously be the small issue of cutting a neat hole in a metal bumper being harder than a plastic one but I'm not fazed by that, just don't want to do it then find it doesn't work

Cheers guys

I had a set on my Tourneo and they worked fine!

I have bought a set for my new van but....

Haven't got round to fitting them yet!

Both sets look the same though!

When i install Laserline sensors into metal bumpers i have a plastic insert that i fit into the bumper that the sensor then fits into. I have found that the sensors can false trigger on some occassions if fitted directly into metal bumpers. (However, not all the time)

If you let me know the diameter of the hole needed to fit your sensors i will check the laserline spacer internal diameter. If they are of any use you can have them with pleasure.

Hi JLS, the hole saw they supplied in the box is 21mm.

How do you space them when you fit them?

Thanks

Basically when I fit the sensors into a plastic bumper we cut an 18mm hole this allows the sensor to be flush fitted from the rear. When installed into a metal bumper the hole cut is 24mm. This allows for a plastic `ring` or the spacer to be fitted into the bumper and the internal hole size of the spacer is 18mm allowing the sensor to be fitted inside it.

If your sensors are being cut out at 21mm then the spacers i use will be of no use to you unfortunately as the inner diameter is only 18mm.

Just to add my experience to the mix.

The kit i bought was to all intents and purposes identical to a kit which was meant for plastic bumpers - ut htey stipulated in the add that they were suitable for metal ones.

The hole saw i got in my Kit was only really suitable for cutting plastic and i had to buy a step drill as well. be careful using the drill though as you can continue onto the back of the van if you arent careful

The spacing i used was done by eye and look and functions ok. Try and get your end ones as close to the edge of the van as you can. this will help with the areas you cant see. Then space the others as you see fit.

Have a look at my project in my link for a view of what they look like and a possible place to hang your sensor unit.

Best of luck and feel free to PM me if i can offer any help or advice.

Cheers
