jump starting

Postby steevo » Thu Dec 02, 2010 12:49 pm

my impatient dad has just tried to jump start his 51 plate transit. he put the leads directly onto the battery instead of using the points under the bonnet(he couldn't get it open at first until i got there). he says it turned over a couple of times then heard a ''loud pop''. once i opened the bonnet and used the points, i am getting nothing now but can hear the starter relay clicking. any ideas if it is a common problem????

Could be the starter full of shite from the flywheel, mine was caked in it, I took the starter off, dismantled it, cleaned all the crap out and bought new brushes & selenoid now it turns over like a good one. try to get the starter bench tested.

could also be that the battery needs a damn good charge as mine did,,cold kept affecting battery perfermance..i took it off ,full y charged it overnight put it back on with some 10mm polystyrene underneath the battery and some lagging taped around it to keep it relatively warm ..the loud pop ?..im not 100%sure but is there a big fuse on the positive lead close to the battery? batteries seem to hate the cold

i had this myself last year and did a flywheel conversion but the weather/temperature as it is i would say check the above first ,,inc all leads and connections :D

the 'loud pop' on mine was the contacts burnt out in the starter but yes definately check connections

wont make any difference wether he used the battery terminals or jump start points, there both joined to the battery leads
