anywhere helpful for mot in essex?

Postby dean_king » Tue Dec 28, 2010 4:27 pm

ok, here goes.
i have a MK5 (Preg 1996) a bit rotten in the wings an arches to say the least.
not having deep pockets or anything like spendable money in the folding variety,
i was wondering if there are any places for an mot that help rather than hinder
in the colchester area.
a long shot i know, but if i dont ask i wont know.

many thanks,

Mr dk.

errrrr, me thinks you have the wrong idea.
i wouldnt drive anything on a bent mot as ive
bought motors in the past that have had em an
no way want to be associated with it.
however at the same time i want to avoid
some of the treatment ive got from past mot's.
ive had motors return with hammer marks in the sills
an vallance, an yes i do mean hammer marks, i know
what a ballpin hammer mark looks like as ive made a few
myself! also being charged £150 to put a seatbelt in is just
taking the p*&^!
my transit has rusty wings as most bt smiley do, i also
have some rust issues on the sides aswell an thats
befor you get to the rear doors. its had a bit of welding
done on one sill an nothing underneath or any advisors of it.

P.s. forgot to say, by helpful i mean to give an idea of how to sort
issues rather than just given a fail sheet an FU mate.

so, no im not looking for a dodgy mot an if that is all thats thought,
then i take it back, maybe i havent found answers.

The outer wings just need to be gaffa tapes so they dont have sharp edges apart from that they can be as rusty as you like as they are a structual part

My sister has a great mot place I will find out next time I speak to her

Something to add is you can get the wings fairly cheap you dont necessarily have to weld them on so not a lot you can make your van look a lot better

many thanks for the input! the kind of stuff i needed.
is that true the wings dont need to be welded? i have already got one (o/s/f if i remember right)
but didnt do anything with it as i cant go near with the arc as it will just melt, and as for me an my
mig, we dont get on, at least not good enough to seam/stitch weld.
so could i just bolt the outer wings on????

will I?

I didn't welded all my wings on but it would be easy enough. If you dont want to weld them on, I would remove the old front wing and roughly where the spot welds were drill a small hole and use self tappers. You could also glue them on with tiger seal or some other adhesive.

Image

You would want to put self tappers along the silver line or glue in place, and in the panel above the headlight.

With the rear wings I would cut the rot out and using a joddler/edge setter make a "set" in the panel on the van. Cut the new wing to size and glue it on... Skim of filler and job done :)

Just be glad you arn't doing this:

That was a pain!

wings are not structural so dont need to be welded, they also wont fail the MOT - but any sharp edges etc need to be covered in tape

Excellent! i shall have the grinder an self tappers out tomorow!
i was under the assumption wings were structural, but if their not, then all good news for me :)
many many thanks to all for this one.

as for your pics, geez i am glad i dont have to go that far!
just the thought of doing wings is enough for me...
