Terrano 2.7 engine to 93 2.5 di diesel adaptor plate.

Postby bradleyorath » Wed Dec 29, 2010 9:21 pm

Sounds a bit cryptic I know! But I have a 84 landrover defender with a transit 2.5 di n/a fitted when original engine died. I have managed to get a 2.7 turbo engine from a terrano and wondered would it fit the ford bell housing adaptor. I have noticed the kits cost in the region of 380 squids from the taxi conversion people which is a bit high for me. I could get my own mounts made locally... just need to know if the bell housing adaptor matches? Has anyone made this happen before?

thanks Mike

ER.... sounds like youre trying to add an adapter to an adapter? that would be silly!! be far easier to make a new adapter or ask about on the land rover forum for the real thing!

Of course we would suggest you keep the Di as its good! and good engines are very cheap - if you use a terrano why not use the big 3.0? and try to get one without the electronic pump as thay can be quite pricey!

Good luck

Had a quick scout at this (always looking to make a few bob, ie the adapter plates) mulling over some LR forum, they were slating the Di because of the noise....

Yeh, I've never understood some land rover owners spend forever ( and lots of quids) cramming adapters and noisy disels into their basically agricultural rattly boxes! in the pursuit of 30+mpg and 100+ brake horses

When they allreday have access to a nice V8 petrol  :? and run it on gas!

I have 2 V8 land rovers which cost peanuts, and are quiet and smooth, and having just done 500 miles in a dog of Range rover, (complete vehicle 650 quid) quiet with electric leather armchairs, and I've just calculated it at 20p per mile on the gas at motorway prices.
Even the 2.0tddi FWD van running empty at the same speed costs 16p per mile on diesel and any diesel land rover product is going to cost 19p/ mile if it even reaches that magical 30mpg  and thats before you work out how much more they are to buy/ mess with!

Come on you're choice is nissan taxi engine in the wrong vehicle or 4 litre V8 for the same running costs? no brainer really!!!

the 2.5di is more of a taxi engine than the 2.7 terrano engine.

the 2.7 is a great engine plenty of pull and power, and super quite

I quite agree with the merits of it as an engine! - a mate has a late maverick with one, and the big one from the cabstar will pull a house down, but I still wouldn't spend much effort fitting one to a vehicle where the V8 was so easy! I'm all for simple and cheap, and my V8 manual disco is both and pretty rapid! and It would fit a 90 very easy with breakers yard bits when the body dissolves entirely :D which won't be long!

they are the ones who havent had a series 3 with a 2 1/4 diesel then :D :D I used to wear ear defender when i was going on a long fast trip(if you count 60mph fast in a series) and that one had a overdrive as well....

What happy memories! only one I ever drove with overdrive felt like switching the engine off! hadn't the power to cruise in normal gears let a alone with a higher ratio!

Ah yes..but the crux of the matter is will the terrano engine fit the the transit adaptor? I know the 2.7 has better power. Not sure about consumption though... the transit engine is giving about 28 mpg at the moment. guess the only way to find out is get a bellhousing from the scrappy and try it. another option I was going to look at was seeing if I could get the terranno exhaust manifold to fit the transit engine and see if the pump could be mated to the tranny engine as I have looms and electrics for the terrano engine. But that's a lot of brainwork. Cheaper to fabricate a manifold adaptor than bellhousing one.

Odds of the terrano engine fitting an adapter for a completely different engine are slim indeed, remember a transit engine never went near anything maverick or terrano shaped.
Easier to get a tranny turbo then you have no fabrication to do at all!
Otherwise you could get a spare L rover bellhousing and hold it up to you're terrano engine and work out how to make a new adapter plate.
Its only a very carefully drilled sheet of 20mm.............. with some very large cutouts to gas axe out...... in the right place........ - but they do exist in land rover circles ready made!

As do Tdis for sensible money which bolt in easily- you can buy complete disco Tdis with rot for £600 and then sell you're terrano engine :?

If you're investing in a proper conversion to use a good engine you may as well BUY the proper adapter, if youre on a budget then it is much easier to stick with either another transit engine or revert back to something sensible and land rover shaped!

Hmmm might go for that option. If I get a bell housing from scrappy to use as template and make template from back of terrano should be able to make one myself. The Turbo option is what I'm really after but I think the tranny engine is still noisy with the turbo. I shall have to experiment. I can't really afford to get a transit manifold and turbo they go for big money on thingybay... £125 and more and getting rare, its all mk4 5 and later now. Shall have another look now
Thanks Mike
