Egr pipe

Postby Rod Smith » Sun Jan 23, 2011 9:57 pm

I have a 05 transit 350 pickup in the garage just now,the pipe from the maifold to the egr valve has snapped,I've disconnected both ends and the mounting bracket but it seems that it wont come out,and if it did theres no way a new pipe could be refitted!
Looks to me like the gearbox might have to come out, while thats a bit drastic a new clutch wont go amiss at 95 thousand.
Anyone been here before?

Hi. My pipe has also done this yesterday, havn't looked at it properly yet though.
Why has this happened? Do you think its a pre-curser to problems with the EGR valve?
I don't even know the name of the pipe to ask for at ford, its not in the haynes manual.
If you can, let me know how you get on...

Hi Jay, thanks for info.
I'v heard/seen to do that a couple of times,
but also it 'apparrently' causes loss of power and ups the fuel cons.
Also i'm confused as to why they bother to continue to fit
these egr systems if they're just a pain, and it seems to be common
knowledge to blank them off? I would of said the engines are designed
to run with them (egr systems) complete.
I get the feeling if i blank it off, it will cause other problems down the
line (i.e. exaust).
I do pretty long journeys, so i'm trying to avoid any unesscesary risks
of breaking down etc.
but, if you've done this before and it worked, i'l give it a try.
My van is a transit jumbo 2004 2.5D
so i don't think its the electronic EGR (is that correct?).
Thanks again!

There are no downsides to blanking the EGR, it is merely there to satisfy emissions standards, but actually chokes the engine from running at max efficiency.
Blanking it off certainly doesn't affect performance or consumption, except in a positive way :D

Thanks altransit.
Is that the same for the newer transits?
Don't they have electronic EGR valves. (which would make the engine light on the dashboard come on?).

Yes, I believe that it can't be done on the MK7's :(

Well I got the pipe off,but only after dropping the subframe and the rear gearbox mounting!
I pulled the box out and the clutch was shot as was the DMF,after a bit of phoning round it appears no one makes a solid flywheel conversion for this model [6 speed TDCi] so had to go Ford ££££££'s
Blanking the EGR pipe is an option, easy enough on a banana engine but a bit of a pig on this one,I;m fitting a new pipe anyway, but think I might blank it off at the EGR end to see what happens, judging by the amount of crud in the manifold etc dont think it can hurt.

Hi Rod.
Have i seriously got to drop the gearbox down to get that pipe off!
Hells bells.
Anyway glad your winning.
I think i'm gonna show my mate the broken pipe, and see if he can weld it 'in situ'.

there is a solid conversion for this van 135 tdci one of the ebay transit centres do them they are a made up by them self using o.e luk which is the o.e and im told they are as good as the other kits for the smaller ps,
these vans are sold in other countries from new with a solid kit fitted as standard, its just that we are told by the manufacturere we need a bit more refinement (they think we have more money than our european cousins to pay for the soddin things)

I'm sure theres an easier way but given the mileage of this pickup and the abuse it gets,it was a good call pulling the box!
Not 100% sure but I think the pipe is stainless steel and as thick as a fag paper,I think it possible to blank the pipe at the manifold with patience and long arms neither of which I have!

thanks 4 reply (s).
yes i'l see if i can blank it at the end that comes out of the exaust, (and goes to the egr valve) as this will in effect cut out the length of pipe, so it won't matter if its bust or not. Anybody know the actual name of that length of pipe?
