Gearbox question

Postby Boner » Sun Jun 12, 2005 3:30 pm

Hi
Just need to pick the brains of someone that will know for sure!
As u may know i have 2 identical mk4 100L lwb.
The latest was to replace my berther but im not sure now.
Let me explain.
In my old yin it has a 5 spd gearbox thats black in colour and probably the original by the looks of it. Works fine no problems at all.
The new van i bought has an silver Alloy? gearbox which i presume is a replacment or is it the other way around.
They both have the same ratio etc.
Problem is on the newly bought one all i can say is the gearbox seems to be sitting wrong :?. First noticed cause the 1st and 2nd gear selction is sometimes difficult from say 3rd,4th or 5th antyhing really going back to those gears, at first i thought o no  but the gearbox itself is actually working fine and all gears mesh well.
The hard selection was due to the gearlever itself fouling the gator below the runbber boot. it sits over to the LH side of the hole were as my other van gearbox sits fine and the gearlever is coming up throuhg the hole exactly in the middle fouling nothing also the gearbox itself is futher over on my older van making it sit right below the hole inline. the new one is offset i think.
I dont have a clue all i can think is something to do with mounts or wrond gearbox from wrong MK.
As i said evrything seems fine just this is wrong comapred to my toher van and those 2 gears are a pain.
Any ideas lads?
I did only pay 800 for the van so not expecting a babe but this is something worrying.
Cheers guys aprriciate any help on this.

Right ave decided she going!
Gone take the back doors, side loading door, axles, steering rack and all other spares i can and transfer the good ones from my van so have a good van still to re-sell.
Basically the new van was nice to drive and evrything apart from above post -seems in check but i had Berther for 4 years now i think and i know exactly whats wrong with her- very little and im bloody attached  .
Also i said the new one is restricted in another thread and this is a major issue now that i drove her around Edinburgh today- struggles on the hills we have with the little tools i ahd on me- nowhere near what i usually carry.
Also the new van has normal shocks att he back rather than heavy duty.
All in all ive made a right pigs arse of this BUy. The van was cool i bought but at the end of the day after 4 years of me tinkering and being fussy my old van seems the better of the 2.

the black box is likely to be the replacement if i am not mistaken, i have seen a couple of these advertised as "refurbished units" and they arent cheap as i think the ones i saw are proper refurbishments

sorry hit reply before i had finished typing :P

the offset thing, you could be right about the wrong version, mt75 boxes have central gearshift, the type 9 (??) and earlier have it offset to the n/s of the van, it might also explain the different clours ... i was assuming in my previous post that both boxes were mt75's

as for making a pis ear of the buy ... maybe maybe not, if the body is better on the new one swap stuff over and keep the best of both that way, or if you can seel it for what you paid, nothing major lost.

as for the gearshift problem. make a new section that has exactly the same size hole in it with about 3 inches spare metal all round then position it where you need it and then make the original hole bigger, and then bolt the gator back down and either weld the new section or bolt it in place. or ... go to breakers and cut out the section you need from the transmition tunnel (i might even have that bit kicking around somewhere from my mk2 mt75 conversion, it will probably do you)

Hi gunslinger
Thanks for that advice man really aprriciate it..
I have been using the new van for work and the gearbox is ok once you get used to it and getting used to sensible speeds again. Ill see how it goes selling the van if i get arsed about with stupid offers ill probably just garage the old one and get the engine and box swaped across.
I worked out my pennies and buying the van has saved me in the long run as it has what i was wanting to buy anyways i just paniked a bit to soon  .
just gota find someone to do the work now
Cheers

From whit i can see i have to disconnect the propshaft. undo all the bolts to the engine and bellhouse bit i think its called. then use a trolley jack to lower it out fi under the van???

what bits you are planning to change will make a difference to the way you are going to do stuff.

if its an engine and box swap (which you mentioned) then i would advise not seperating them, simply disconnect everything including prop, lower the back gearbox support using a trolly jack and then lift the whole thing out together (after youve removed the bonnet, radiator and front panel of course) and swap in the other unit

i would remove the old engine and bocx first, that way if you make any early errors it will be with your old kit, and learn from that for the removal of your new engine and box

i am sure that if needed then between us we could come up with a complete step by step guide :P:P

Awight folks
How can i post piccies up?? i got some photees of the vans in question.. i reakon ull see what i mean instantly..
I was having a scurry around underneath the new yin yesterday and the gearbox is deffiantly diffrent.. i rekaon its not even original. Looks kin huge under there tbh compared to the black mt75 unti fitted on the older van but this could just be my eyes confused cause one is shiny silver.
Otherwise both vans are in really good nick for their ages underside.. no rot at all and no welding needing done.. happoy with that like :D
I now actually got both vans up for sale see what happens..
If either dont sel thats the van to keep! basicallt nothing between em.
If they both sell i buy a really clean van and make sure it stays that way.
Its came back to me nothaving time to do the sh*t i want to the vans..
Which is a pitty :?
