Diesel/Petrol speedo

Postby chrisvmax » Wed Jun 15, 2005 4:54 pm

Hi,
In my MK2 LWB twin wheel ambulance I have a 2.5 di engine / gearbox fitted. There would originally have been a petrol engine of some sort in there.
Because the gearbox is changed I think my speedo is probably inaccurate.
Is it?
Can it be sorted?

Regards,
Chris

hi mate it could be sorted , but getting the corect speedo drives for the gearbox is very hard now, you will have a 4.63 rear axle if the van was original a front line amby it would of had a 3ltr v6 engine , depending what van you got the gearbox from the speedo would most likely be out! normaly the best way to check this is do you know anybody with a road angel speed camara detector , if you do you could borrow it and plug it in and see what speed you are dooing to the road angel ,these are acurate as they run on gps, this is what i done with mine then marked the speedo with white paint to were my 30-40-50-60 mph is ! hope this helps .mark

Keep guessing....

Postby chrisvmax » Thu Jun 16, 2005 12:35 pm

I've been doing the guessing game so far. If I could get a speedo from a petrol Mk2 would it correct the reading?

For now I'll keep guessing. It's soooo slow the chances of a speeding ticket are pretty slim

Top speed 65mph!!

The speedos thenselves are the same for whatever model, it's the speedo gearing in the gearbox you need to change, and they are not easy to come by. As for the top speed, that's still possible to get you a ticket doing 50 in a 40 area. Just judge it by the other traffic.

Tipex my man
when i put another MT in me LWB out of a SWB the speedo was well over reading so i got the wife to drive in front of me in a car that hadn't been played with (the only one i have access to out of 6  ) she flashed the hazards every 10 MPH and i marked the dash and it's still there
in 3 vans, one cortina and me recovery only the escort reads properly

Here are my 2 methods.. 2 vans both accurate as far as i know. one van faster though so its the 2nd table.
1st gear=10
2nd gear=20
3rd gear=30
4th gear =40
5th gear =50
I use this van for work so its gently driven most times.
or
1st gear =20 with lots of wheelspin
2nd gear= 35 slam it into second
3rd gear = 60 if u want to really get moving. and they all do in this gear
4th gear = kin as much as the engine ge ya capatin otherwise pointless.
5th gear= ur deffiantly breaking a speed limit of sorts surly and vibrations are terrifying, brakes almost no use stopping from these speeds  doom crash burn agghhhhh.
I think bouncy speedos are the funiiest to judge.. my m8s transit is roughly 10mph to fast when ur hammering it but is ok when ur gentle lol lol i have found a 285 mile trip on a motorway at steady speeds solves this problem/
Totaly irrelivant but i no been booked yit.. Good luck m8.
