Well its been a while since i updated this post. Been waiting for stuff to get sorted in life and with the truck. Well today was the start of the big rebuild.
Managed to get the truck inside my workshop after a lot of moving and organising stuff over the last few week's.
Started by removing the truck floor and the rear light panel and then the towbar, rear mudguards and a few of the outriggers. Hopefully i will get the ride height checked, measured and set then its time to pull the axle and propshaft of and start on the rebuild.
I had a email this afternoon saying my laser cutting brackets should be done ready for the morning. Gotta go to my mates yard and remove the propshaft im gonna be using.
Updates should be quite regular as i wanna crack on and get this done as its stollen most of my workshop space.
Well managed to go and remove the shorter propshaft this morning then i got a message that the brackets had been cut and ready to collect.
Managed to get the truck ride height worked out and then lifted the front onto ramps got the rear up on axle stands and started to remove the rear axles hopefully the rear axle, suspension ect will be removed by the weekend.
Managed to remove the complete rear axle with all the suspension. Swapped in the shorter propshaft, its about 12 inchs shorter. Put the mk7 single wheeled axle under the truck. Needs to be squared up and the the diff angle needs to be set. The chassis needs to be lowered down to get it to ride height. Loads done but even more to do.
Ground all the old riv nuts from the chassis rails and i have also started to remove the outriggers as the whole rear end will be different.
Well thats 4 more outriggers cut of and removed, i also had to move my new NOS doors as they have been in the way. If only i could find the last door i would be over the moon.
But of machining done today, made up the 4 50mm spacers for the front mounting plates and 2 46mm spacers to use when welding the 50mm spacers in place. Dont want the rose joints anywhere near the heat from the welding. Just slotted together to make sure it all lines up. I have more machining to do as need to make 8×63mm crush tube spacers to let into the chassis rails where the front mounting plates will bolt on to.
Another job done, 8 new chassis crush tubes. 63mm long, 3/4 diameter, with a 12mm hole though them. These are slightly over long but once the chassis rails are drilled they will be adjusted.
Well the re-made front plates are back from laser cutting, had to clean out all the bolt holes, fitted the spacers and now there of to get stuck together.
Been have a think and it looks like my twin air compressors will be living in these holes in the chassis. Hopefully it will keep them out of the way and safe.
Well a massive thanks to my brother-in-law Jamie, the front mounting brackets have been stuck together, with there added spacer tubes. The last set of large holes are for some cross bracing to add some extra strength.
