In preparation for the February MoT I did some completely non-essential work while my new to me double passenger seat dries from the jet wash.

This will be storage and the support for the bed/sofa. The board behind the drivers seat will be the back of more storage and controls for the fan/rear lights so I reach them from the front or back  Will be building the same to cover the arch on the other side.

Thought I’d have more to show for an all day effort. Trying to find every space possible for a little bit of storage. Changed approach so I’ve got a gap for the curtain when it goes up. One day there will be lids and doors on all of this.

feel like i’m getting somewhere with this but still so much to do. tomorrow will be the nerve racking experience of cutting out doors for cupboards and drawers.

Biscuit storage is kind of essential  Something with an easy access lid

Not so sure its been worth days of my life but there is now plenty of biscuit storage. Making and fitting the sliding jaffa cake drawers tomorrow.

Fuelled by jaffa cakes I finished the unit today (minus the drawers as the sliders are arriving tomorrow)

Asked my mum to make me a curtain and she’s never been happier. it’s got a nice thick thermal layer and is completely black from the other side, including the ribbon and hooks. Also finished the carpeting of the rear and side load door panels. Also another successful trip to the breakers for various bits of wire, new front bumper reinforcement (plastic one. hope it still fits in place of the rusty metal one) and a set of transit custom wheel arches. Held them up against a trashed Mk6 and looks like they could do the job. Just worried they’ll stick out more than my wheels can justify and i’m not changing them. Couldn’t get any door mirrors to experiment with adapting power fold mirrors because all the vans with mirrors still on had those security bolts. Will keep looking.

Have been slowly putting in more fuel until the tank is full. Felt brave and did a fill-to-fill reading for the first time. Got 34.7mpg which doesn’t seem too bad. That was going at 55-60mph most of the time. And there’s room for improvement in with a lower reving gearbox ratio and a remap. Maybe even an underfloor and some other tweaks to help the aero. Feels like a good time to bother with mpg as I went past one station selling at £1.75L (another down the road at £1.57 so they’re trying it on clearly).

Managed to get 36mpg now. Looking forward future aero gains. In the meantime building a sofa/bed that folds up so it can still be used for van things. Got a nice free futon mattress from a gated community with a duck pond. The kind of house where they put down clear mats to protect all their carpets. So that’s saved on fumigation costs. Not yet convinced the frame will be sturdy enough so the backup is to make a steel one.

Okay well this was a big moment. Finally, after much internal swearing, many biscuits and losing all my pencils…

After 5 days over 3 weekends the sofa bed is functional and i found some time to do some much needed odd and little jobs. Still so far to go but hopefully i’ve broken the back of it now.

Tested the fold away function. needs a bit of work on the mattress to held it fold but the structure works

Wasn’t so happy with the snow and ice in April?!?
64B0705C-3A67-4E4F-AB65-754B60B39348.jpeg

Painted the grubby B-pillar covers, insulated the cavity inside and fitted a sneaky switch for the cargo bay lights. Got another by the rear doors. very convenient but can still be switched for lights to go on when the doors open

If this paint works i’ll be so happy. all the Halfords vinyl and bumper plastic paints just scratch and flake. this stuff brushes on nicely to the textured surface and so far seems a lot harder wearing. but even if there is a scratch i can just touch it up. Much cheaper and easily found at Toolstation I think.

After the electronics work it seemed like a good idea to fit a fire extinguisher. Will also put a battery cut off here

Finally, finally, finally corrected that horror show of an attempt at an aero bumper. First used expanding foam, covered with fibreglass filler, plastic filler, truck bed liner spray for texture and Halfords dark grey bumper spray for the OEM look.

Also actually slept in the thing for the first time. Was very cosy. Here it is in double bed mode:
