Matts new Mk7 Limited

Postby MinorMatt » Thu Jun 19, 2025 9:48 am

Since the last mk7 blew up (anyone want a tatty but solid van with a dead engine?), and the one I bought ages ago being terminally rotton I had been vaguely on the lookout for a London LEZ compliant van. Didn't need to be anything special, but towing ability was a bonus.

And I saw this one on FB. Its a 2009 140PS Limited 330S. Advertised as smoking badly and a rubbish advert I thought I had better go and take a look... plus it was cheap.

Anyway I arranged to go and see it on Friday last week, but in the end the traffic was too bad and I would have ended up getting there later than the vendor could manage. Normal speil of several other people were going to look over the weekend etc. Anyway - I got a message on Monday that nobody showed and it was still available.

Grabbed a colleague and drove up to Walsall to take a look after work - and I ended up driving it back to the workshop for the princely sum of £890

Its a proper builders van - there are lots of marks, bits of paint light scratches etc on the outside, the rear doors and the side door are both bent, but there is very little other than light damage on the shell itself. It needs no welding underneath at all. Nothing. It just wants more rustproofing. Under the bonnet is a similar story. A few brown marks but nothing major. The outer sill is a bit bubbly and will need some attention, as does the rear corner of the sliding door sill.

Inside - think of a dustbin and you won't be too far off  the limited seats are grubby and have a few small paint marks, the stitching on the drivers seat is just starting to go. The cab mat is still intact, but the drivers side wheel arch cover is missing. Im planning on (more or less) stripping the cab down (dash out etc) to give everything a deep clean.

The back is filthy too. Will rip that out and put a nice new ply lining kit in.

Engine and gearbox wise... it drives fine. It does put out a bit of hazy smoke if you boot it, but I've seen far worse. First thing I spotted when I got underneath was the amount of oil down the front of the engine. Seller tried to explain it away saying he had spilt some putting more in a couple of days ago - but that didn't explain the amount or where it was. When driving it also smelt of hot diesel ;) anyway after inspection, all the retaining clips for the injector leak off were missing and the O rings are shot. I think that might be a cheap and easy fix!

The smoking... haven't got quite as far as I would like. I have the codes that were stored initially - but haven't driven the van since I cleared them. My gut feel is torn between a boost leak/split intercooler and a faulty turbo VNT controller. I don't really want to pay a months road tax for 10 days (most of when I won't be able to use it anyway!) so thats going to have to wait a few days

Anyway - its a cheap, rattty, LEZ compliant van. One of its first tasks is likely to be with a student group I do a lot with in London - and will save about £600 in van hire costs

I'm a little confused :?

It's LEZ compliant, (as was my Mk6), but it's not ULEZ compliant, so you can't escape Khan's highway robbery :(

Oh yes

I forgot - there was a minor issue on the drive back - the heater was stuck on full hot...

At Frankley services I had a quick look and the vacuum pipe had come off the diverter... quick and easy fix? Nope. Still didn't work and stuck on hot!

Whilst trying to cable tie the arm in the cold position - the diverter broke and let all the coolant out

I identified I could cut the pipe too it, kink it back to the thermostat housing and just bypass the matrix. Unfortunately nobody in the shop could help with pliers or other tools to get the spring clips off. At which point a tyre fitter arrived and he lent me a pair of mole grips. Top bloke. About 2 minutes later I was back up and running, and drove back to the petrol station to give him his grips back and top up the coolant from the water dispenser :)

Correct

But its one thing to pay £12.50 (ULEZ) a day, quite another to pay £112.50 (LEZ + ULEZ) a day... Especially when you go in at about 6pm and leave at about 6am the next morning! £25 as opposed to £225

Emptied the cab...

2 bin bags worth of crap and probably about a fivers worth of 1p and 2ps...

The front mount on the drivers seat is broken and the stiching is coming apart. Both seats have paint on.

Might have to fit the tomy ones from the breaker

I'm sure I put another post up :( my phones been doing silly things since it had an operating system update. Oh well only 6 months until its out of contract

Anyway... dash is now out. So much crap cleaned out from behind it... sugar packets, pencils and codine  galore. Also anoher £6 or £7 in loose change. Its slowly beginning to pay for itself  everything under the dash has been cleaned up - the baked on coffee (I guess) residue all over the heater box has been soaking so hopefully that will come off easily now.

Most of the "treasure" and coffee behind the dash fell down a hole (about 3" diameter) cut in the dash below the flappy cupholder thing. I can't see why anyone would have done that?

Once the (holeless) dash from the donor is out, thats going in. I am hopefully it has the same wiring loom so I don't have to pick it all apart. Both are high spec vans.

Interestingly the remote locking doesn't work without the dash wiring in place. Central locking works on the key, but sets the alarm off whenever you open the van - which is a bit of a pain. After I locked up it was going repeatedly for about 5 minutes until (presumably) the internal battery ran out (main battery disconnected).
