1997 County 4x4 - new pics added

Postby fastmower » Sat Sep 22, 2007 6:55 pm

Hi all,

Just took a few pics today whilst I was stripping the interior shelving etc out of the County - thought you might like to have a look! Also removed the 12 volt fridge and the gas cooker.

The rear of the van has been ply lined and then carpeted over the top - I'll probably leave all that alone for the time being at least as it looks reasonably tidy. There's the bulkhead to take out - and I reckon I'm going to look for a single passenger seat to make access from the front easier. If anyone needs a bulkhead let me know. It has the hole for a window - and there's a metal panel that fits this hole if you don't want it glazed.

Here's a pic of the inside - there was a framework to support a small double bed down the near side - that's been removed already.

This is from the back doors:

Bulkhead mounted hot water handwash - runs off an extension circuit from the engine cooling:

N/S rear subframe - taken whilst sitting up ( :P  ) underneath the van

Lastly for the moment - anyone know anything about winches? This is a Ramsey - no idea what model. There's a three pin plug for a remote below the rear bumper - and then today I found this little box just hanging loose. There's a wire heading towards the winch motor - and the little box has a yellow + sign with a rotational arrow below it - does anyone know what it is or what it's for??

Oh - if anyone wants a Michelin Agilis tyre that one on the spare will be up for grabs soon. I'm not honestly sure if it's been used or not - if it has it's done very little mileage - all the road tyres are All Terrains rather than straight "road" tyres.

Cheers all,

Andy

Sorry Guy - going to be using the fridge again at some stage mate. If I'm off racing and it's somewhere the kids would have nothing else to do I sometimes go on me own - in which case I'll just take the van and leave the caravan at home.

@ Fred - the floor's a bit light for my taste - I might re-do it with some oak laminate left over from a job in the house!

Couple more pics of the subframes - I'll get a few more tomorrow if the weather holds.

Bit dark for more tonight but I'll take some more tomorrow. Don't forget I have a few spares pics from County if anyone needs them.

Cheers all,

Andy

1997 County 4x4 new pics

Postby fastmower » Tue Dec 11, 2007 10:36 pm

Hi all,

Not much to report in the way of progress yet, but I have managed to remove the winch/rear step assembly today. Turned out to be a bit of a job!

There are 4 30mm bolts holding the assembly to the chassis - and after failing miserably at home, I cracked them at work a while back with some 3/4 drive gear and a big bar. Cracking them wasn't enough, and after failing miserably again at home at the weekend (and twisting a 1/2" drive bar into two bits), I set about them at work with 1" drive tools today! Basically a tommy bar and five foot of scaffold pole - and I was right at the end of the pole! Quarter of a turn at a time on each one and I soon felt like the Oxford crew must feel half way through the boat race - and the bolts being about four inches long didn't help a deal either! Ended up taking one hour and ten minutes - they never came slack at all and creaked all the way out, even though the threads didn't look bad rust wise.

Was quite handy I did it at work as I could get the clamp on the forklift under it to support it - the winch assembly and the towing bracket framework had been welded together so it was all in one lump. Don't know what it weighs but two of us struggled getting it in the back of the van!

Next job is to strip it all - not working at the moment, and don't know how long since it was last worked, and the clutch lever is seized up. If anyone knows about winches - any idea what the little black box is? It has a wire leading towards the motor, and a "+" sign stuck on it with a semicircular arrow beneath it - but no switches, knobs, levers or anything else movable on it. It was tie wrapped to the winch frame. The remote control was a plug in affair - a three pin job about the size of a caravan mains socket. It's a Ramsey 8000lb job.

Also fitted a new exhaust to the Mk3 (from http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk) which is still living in the unit at work. Went for a new prop at the weekend but the guy had sold the last one he had in stock, so just waiting for a call now when he gets me one.
