You reminded me about rust and the lack of Mk2s on the road (well not my road obviously...)

the lack of mk 2's is not just rust, most of them got exported, people were snapping them up to ship abroad

Mainly the salt they put on the roads in the winter, mixed with the amount of rain we get and its a haven for the tinworm Plus most of them never got treated properly from day one!

I'd go for a MK1, MK2 or MK3 for work, too! Because they're more reliable than newer ones and easier to fix, too! Too many electronics in newer ones! And less capacity with too much hp: That's not good for an engine which should last long!

yes we all think alike fred but most people dont ! they want new because of there image! and most vans now are lease hire so they can have a good thrashing and it dont matter as long as they go!

Don't get me on costs! As I type I have three vans doing nothing outside (lutons, not props though they do film work), for the cost of the road tax and round here a permit for £25 a year. if you add to that MOT at £40, repairs to pass it at £400 MAXIMUM, with the insurance we can stand a van around for around £1,000 per year, and have them ready how we want them when we want them. There is no way we could do that if we were paying for them week in week out, in either HP or lease hire.

I purchased my van because of image.I am self employed and visit customers addresses every day.A good clean ,tidy ,presentable van goes a long way for repeat business.Right or wrong the paying public do notice the age of the van you are running.
Also touch wood my van has been totally trouble free in the two years i have owned it.Not a single fault.
I am not saying there is anything wrong with older vans either .My last Transit was a 1988 transit 80 with a 2 litre pinto and i made that last 10years.I loved that van.It just got too rusty and untidy for public work.

There's only one person to blame for a van getting too rusty to use mate

I'm the same with my customers, and many of them comment on it and cant believe how old it is
