1985 transit 2.0Efi surf bus

Postby mike c » Mon Mar 31, 2008 10:17 pm

took the chance to get some pics of the van this weekend when the sun was out......

recently changed the old pinto lump for a sierra injection lump, running the Efi, skimmed head for 10.2:1, kent fr34 cam, gonna get a four branch on there soon and get it set up on a rolling road. It goes a lot better now... can cruise at 70 easily - more if i want and last tank got 25mpg mixture of motorway and town driving. LPG is nearly in too.

unfortunately the overdrive decided to leak when i got back on sun so the van is on axle stands again, but it will be rebuilt and back on by weekend 8)

enjoy!

 i'd say it does need setting up, my EFi will hang around a ton all day long if i want, and will happily run to 110.....and thats with a tappy cam and 130k on the clock
:!:

That's nice. Did you fit the sierra engine? Was it any trouble to set up?

cheers for the comments

the wheels are 15", they definately make the van, it looked pretty rubbish on the old wheels, the van is never gonna be mint, i plan thi summer to get the underneath cleaned up, repainted where needed and covered in stonechip, and cavity wax the box sections. The exterior i'm not too bothered about, just as long as it doesn't rust too much.

i put the engine in on me own, fairly easy really, just bolts up everywhere. Did the fuel system properly with two pumps and swirl pot, wiring loom was the usual faff but as simple as efi systems get really, my old rad was leaking so ive used the sierra one, fits nicely and is a bit bigger than the old one.

Gavin: is yours a mk2 or later? i reckon its got plenty left in it at 70, but its been wet for most of the driving i've done, leaf springs and warped discs up front aren't the best speed test conditions!

anyone know if the later petrol transits have an oil cooler? just wondering whether to fit a oil-water cooler as the engine is doin a whole lot more than it did in the sierra.

mine's a '94, dosent have an oil cooler, and it flies! i was rushing back from a job the other day down a country road and actually left the ground at one point over a small crest, decided it was time to slow down

wasnt as quick when i got it, but then every ford ive ever had has got better the harder its worked

not sure i'd like to get mine airborne, not sure it'd cope!

done the overdrive, fairly straight forward, didnt need any of the special tools the haynes book of lies talks about. the whole thing was full of swarf, from the filter all the way through. Cleaned it all out, back together with new o-rings and gaskets and its working like new 8) it wasn't coming out of overdrive reliably before and it was slipping in reverse.

so the van is back on the road :D ready for me to go fix my friends '86 jetta mot failure tomorrow - fun fun fun!

i need some mudflaps and a 4 branch exhaust manifold now, anyone know what type fits a mk2 without much fuss? also where shall i get an exhaust system from? are off the shelf ones still about?

when i put a pinto back in my mk2 i used a mk2 rs 4 branch manifold but you have to modify the bottom as the outlet lines up with the gearbox crossmember. needs a bit of an s bend to clear it :)
