V6 ESSEX INTO 96 S,W,B

Postby shirehorse » Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:39 am

HI ,,

im currently in the process of sourcing a essex v6 engine wich im hoping to drop in my 96 s,w,b , im assuming that if i remove the engine from an ambulance (with the box ) that it will pretty much drop right in without to much fabrication of engine mounts ect , also if i remove diesel tank and wash it out with petrol , it will serve its purpose ?? also would the radiator from the ambulance fit?? ive looked around on here for similar projects but cant seem to find any .. please let me kno if for some reason this project is not possible as im gonna rip the derv motor out and sell it to top up the funds for the v6 and i dont wanna end up scrapping me van ,,

if anybody can shed some light or give me any pointer,s ide be most greatfull .. cheeRS in advance , mike

Gearbox will be totally different so you will need to make sure you get the gearbox cross member and propshaft, you will also need to cut the floor for the gearstick.

ah ok ,, that makes it a bit more tricky ,, im off to the scrappers tomozza where there is apparently a v6 bubble backed ambulance camper type transit hidden away in the corner ,, hopefully it will be complete and i will drag it out and bring it home ,, ive got a plazma cutter and a new welder so i should be able to make a good start .. cheeRS , MIKE ( GREAT WITH SPANNERS AND WELDERS!! surely it will fly with v6 essex .. ive got carry nothing heavier than a pitbike or two and a few amps and stuff
i was under the impression it would transform my van in to a racer !! maybe im wrong but lets face it anything is faster than a standard tranny 2.5 di

you see i have three transits ,, a semi high top s,w,b , wich i use for carrying all my work stuff (tools blocks slabs ladders ect ect ) i also have a twin wheel tipper wich i also use for work these two are fully laden at all times and are slow as your gran !!
im not really sure why i bought the one im planning to convert but i did and ive read a lott and learnt a lott from this forum and i juss thought ide have a bash at putting a v6 in ,, i thought ide go for the essex as it has no injection , i was also under the impression that it would sorta juss fit right in .. im paying my scally m8 to take my derv motor out tomozza so from then on in there,s no turning bk , lol ile probably regret it but when the engines out the pressure is on ,, ile keep you posted cheeRS

What's a bubble back ambulance? Do you mean a Mk2 van type? tb2 is selling an essex BTW.

you should be ok :D - take as much as you can from the donor - complete engine mounts including the bits bolted to the chassis rails - same with the gearbox crossmember etc. - i'd also take the prop :D

the mk5 chassis rails are the same distance as the mk3 (what mk is the amby) but the mounts are different - the essesx box will only be a 4 speed - i wouldnt worry too much about the floor i'd just mod the hole position as you have the largest box tunnel with the mk5 so the earlier box will fit fine :D

you know there is 2 types of V6 essex and cologne (mine being a cologne 24v)

keep us updated sounds a good project 8)

oh and pics too
