Mk4 luton project

Postby mattg » Tue Jul 15, 2008 8:54 pm

Hello everyone, i thought i would document the progress on my j reg luton. Im pretty inexperienced at all this but im learning fast! all tips and comments welcome.
So it has no mot, and the engine needs a bit of tlc. Symptoms: runs v hot, with a lot of pressure in the cooling system (the coolant is leaking somwhere as well). It also needs a new starter. Im concentarting on these bits first, mot stuff can wait til its running.
Ive taken off the rad, old starter and started stripping the engine ready for a new head gasket and timing belt.
this is what came out of the radiator:

Why is it rusty?
Doesnt seem too oily- this is a good sign that the head gasket is ok right??

When i took off the rocker cover, the bolts were very loose (annoying because i went all the way to the shop to get a new torx bit :D ). Presumably this is because somone has thought about doing the head gasket before but then given up :? .

Im having a problem getting the inlet manifold off, because i cant get to the bolt which is just behind the fuel pump. Any ideas?

Once i get the head off, if the head gasket looks ok do i need to replace it anyway? Is it adequate to check for warped head using a flat bar and feeler?
More photos will come as soon as somthing interesting comes up.
Cheers, matt

You could pressure test each cylinder or sniff test the water for exhaust gasses. Both far easier than replacing the headgasket when it may not even be that.

right, well it was probably pretty good that i didnt take off the head.....when i was putting the cooling system back together (with a view to running the engine and then pressure testing) i found a mysterious washer just inside where cool water enters the block. It turned out to be part of the thermostat (i think the bit which stops water flowing directly to the expansion tank??) that had broken off.

So ill get a new thermostat and refit it all- but i was wondering why it might have broken- could it be too much pressure causing it to shear off? could this be an indication of head gasket problem? meanwhile, the radiator is feeling bit sorry for itself, so off to scrappy today to get a new(ish) one.

well, she had her mot today- not too bad! exhaust blowing, steering play and a new bush for shock absorber needed.

regarding the steering, the mot fella said that it was easily tightened by removing the box and having a fiddle. Is this true?? or is it more a case of getting a new box?

The bush is apparently no longer stocked as a spare part. i had a bit of a search on here but came up with nothing- is there somwhere that stocks a bush that will fit, to save having to buy a whole new shock?

soon there will be some more exciting pics of real progress on the bodywork and insides!
matt

EDIT: just found that transit parts uk stock the bushes at £4 ish each. hooray!
