My MK6 280 SWB

Postby fiestaturbo1984 » Tue Mar 27, 2012 11:48 am

Hey guys, this is my first transit project and i have no real reason to have one other than the fact i like vans. Its pretty much going to be my daily transport so looking to tidy it up and make it look a little bit less commercial.

I shall update this thread as and when any work is carried out and will try to take as many photos as i can along the way as no project is that good without lots of pics.

So, this is how i saw it on ebay:

Doesnt look all that bad for a 2001 but as im in high wycombe and the van was in halifax, it was a bit of a blind buy. Anyway, put a bid on and won it for £1400 which i think is fair for a van with 170k on it. It does have a full mot, few months rent in the window and a recent fuel pump and injectors so im quite pleased.

Went up to get it on saturday and the pictures definately make it look better, obviously the locks, whilst fit for purpose, are hideous and will serve me no purpose so they will be removed leaving gaping holes. The rear isnt so much of a problem as short term im going to black vinyl where the windows would be, and then next month i will actually buy some windows and fit them.

The inside of the van wasnt much better, headlining is fooked, seats like a piece of cheese, dash trim all broken up and as for the rear, it seems to have been jetwashed in parrafin, not so great for ply. It absolutely stunk so i have ripped it all out, will clean up any surface rust and have already ordered a complete new ply lining kit.

I have also ordered some mk7 rear lamps and wheel trims, replacement front fogs, a full size mat for the front and some decals. Also some new number plates to freshen it up.
My future plans are to facelift the whole front end, sport van bodykit and wheels and also a respray although im undecided as to what colour. I will also be attempting to fit a mk7 dash in the near future and maybe a mondeo steering wheel.

I shall take some more pictures today to show it in its current state :D

Still waiting on parts to turn up although my parcel force was here at 8.00 as usual to drop me off a couple of things, my 1 piece mat for the front and some decals im thinking of having on the rear quarters. They are kind of relevant as im a supervisor/mechanic at a go kart track. im also bidding on some mk7 passenger seats that i will hopefully win in the next hour.

Just spent the last 2 hours removing all of the old manky ply lining, was expecting to find some nasty rust underneath it all but im pleasantly surprised. apart from a few bits of surface rust there is hardly anything, along the wheel arches is still a lot of crud and some very light surface rust, this will be ground down and treated. big thanks to my girlfriend for cleaning pretty much the whole floor too bless her

Had another productive day today, after ripping out all of the ply yesterday the back was looking a little bare. Had a little road trip today, first off to hayes to pick up some seats from a mk7. didnt expect them to be in as good condition as they are, practically brand new and only removed as the van is being converted to ice cream van.
After we got those it was off to Milton Keynes ply lining for obvious reasons haha. They do offer free fitting but where's the fun in that? On the way back home i had a little thought and stopped at B&Q to grab some loft insulation and plastic sheeting. Thought i may aswell fit some seeing as im not having a bulkhead and i want to at least keep some heat on the van.
Me and my gf spent a good couple of hours fitting it all, mainly because the drill i have here is a piece of crap and only lasts for around 3 screws

Anyway all fitted and looks so much better. Need to now keep my eye out for a mk7 drivers seat.
