Mk1 pick-up -72 V4 Essex

Postby juttu » Fri Aug 23, 2013 7:48 am

Hi all,

just joined the forum, nice to have found it :)

Used to have Range Rovers ('75 3-door, '94 LSEi, '89 Vogue), but since they consume all free time to repairs ;) decided to sell that hobby..and..after just 2 weeks decided to get myself another project car (to keep insane whilst having 3 small kids)..
I live in Finland, close to Tampere city.

So..my recent purchase:

Its a -72 SWB single rear axle with a V4 Essex. Seller said it had been converted to 2.0, but not sure on that..as he claimed its fitted with Granada 2.3 parts..but thats non-existing, right?

Not doing a full resto, as I like (original) rugged style - just going to make it a running piece of retro metal for the road. Also, previous owners have not done things nicely..so its not a good starting point for full resto anyway.

I will fit it eventually with tilt (tipper?) to carry and unload firewood and to make it easier to carry snowmobiles :)
Also planning to make a firewood-container, that I could pull on and drop-off with help of a winch.

Some questions if anyone could help me out?

- rear axle: it a sq tube front loader diff, so is it a Timken aka English?? Could I fit a MK2 LSD in it (-90)? Or if you could point me to the thread where this is discussed, could not find it..sooo much discussion around the topic
- Salisbury axles are also used in Land Rovers, makes me think if they are even same in some models..
- if changing to never complete rear axle, whats the years to do it to get disc brakes, how about the handbrake then? (h.brake not functional at the moment, so I am thinking if its a no-go then I must replace it anyway..)

My next goal is to fix some things and get MOT..during next 4 weeks I guess

By the way welcome to the forum and keep the pictures coming

I so knew its gonna be like this - true British humour  but true - it should be right (side)

Anyway, visited one scrapyard/recycler today just to dig in to rear axle reality - they had one -99 or -98 (wp) LWB in, but unfortunately it was type BL thats the Timken non LSD one.. but I promised to bring him the chart to be able to check and salvage all LSD diffs 8) expecting a favour from him selling me one for pocketmoney ofcourse

Anyway, looking at that MK5 axle - its truly same diff/sq. axle tube etc as what I have in MK1. Maybe the width is different and shock locatrions, but I can do that no problem.

Just had one MK4 axle dropped to my yard - from DL -stamped SWB -96 van. Its supposed to be LSD according the id plate ("D"), but I cannot feel that when turning by hand?
L stands for 4.56 ratio I presume.

Should LSD diff engage already when turning manually..?

The tag in diff bolt says e.g. D4.56 and other codes as well.

Well..looks like the 4weeks have passed, but MOT is still faaar away, have been working on something else.

Did manage to get one partly demolished -90 SWB Diesel cheap, 150EUR, which is not that bad as I will get the same when taking it to scrapper after I am finished with it
Nothing major though, was planning to take the propshaft back flange from it, as the -96 LSD diff had a different flange mounted (oval shape) - but then the -90 is old style round flange as well  Not the best thinking from my side.
Its nice to have extra parts anyway when thinking of fitting parts from different Mks.
Wheels I will keep and the Webasto air-heater, even the chamber seems to have burned through, judging from amount of diesel-moist carpets around it

Will post some doner pics later today.

Nice Pickup you got there :) Great to see that the Finns like old Transits too. So did you find a LSD? We have quite a few MK4 and 5 in the Junkjards here but I have no idea how to see if they have a LSD, maybe you can help me?

Please check this topic: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10363&hilit=vin+identification+plate+Mk3%2C4%2C5
-> should be OK for Mk3,4 and 5. In case you only have the axles left, no VIN/ID plates, then I am not yet sure if the LSD is coded in the tag attached to the diff's...will find out soon, as I have both BL and DL coded (VIN/ID plate) axles, de-cyphering them soon :)

Anyway, checked the prop shaft flanges yesterday, as the Mk4 one has different size and screw combo. Luckily the connection to diff shaft, splines and all is 100% same - wheeew! 8)

Image

Left side flange is mk3 -89 BL (Timken single) the screws are about 60mm apart in square formation, right side is mk4 -96 DL (Timken single LSD) much thicker flange, screws in rectangle formation.
Measured also my MK1 flange, same screw dist as mk3, even the flange diametert is much smaller, maybe screws are smaller as well. Still to check the mating surfaces, looks like they are a bit different, did not have the time yet to check.

EDIT: there is some topic for different axles lengths etc, but could not find it anymore. Anyway: the mk4 axle is about 4" wider than mk3  no matter to my project though..
Ha! found it: Axle info -> viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4713 -> so..mk1 is still 25mm narrower than mk3..hmm looks like my LSD axle is then more than 4" wider, will definately look "trucky" enough

Allright - here are the axle tags:

-89 mk3 (SWB BL axle):
9C2ON4.56:1T34
88VB 4001 BA

-96 mk4 (SWB DL axle, LSD?):
5J7D4.56:1 T34
95VB 4001 CA

There's 2 rows of markings. 88 and 95 seem to be mfg years, ratio 4.56, T34 is Timken type 34..rest unclear, anyone?
(I was hoping the D before ratio would mark LSD, but not sure, have not opened the diff yet)
