Mk6 - My first Transit

Postby cowasaki » Thu Feb 04, 2016 11:50 pm

Well after joining the forum a few days ago I've just picked up my first Transit van. The van is a 2004 Mk6 in college blue.

Image

So the good bits:

The cab is nice, clean and tidy.
Good plastics and carpet and everything works.
Just been serviced and runs well.
I like the colour and it has the electrics pack re mirrors, heated windscreen and fog lights.

Bad bits/faults: (I'm being comprehensive and somewhat picky here - some are just upgrades)

1 ) Casing of driver's mirror has chunk out of it.
2 ) Only had one remote.
3 ) One tyre barely legal.
4 ) Grill is detached from body and body is cracked and broken around grill.
5 ) Headlights are not aiming correctly
6 ) Side door doesn't lock with the other doors but does if I press the lock button for a second time - Is this right ??
7 ) Side door doesn't open readily every time. Sometimes you need to pull it out at the right hand side to get it to open correctly - Need to investigate this.
8 ) Underside is sound but covered in surface rust in areas.
9 ) Some corrosion around some of the wheel arches.
10 ) There is a hole in the side of the driver's seat with the foam also damaged.
11 ) I fancy fitting a Blaupunkt 230 Stockholm DAB BT stereo (although I'd like to fit a double DIN stereo if I can find a way)
12 ) Quite a lot of scratches to the sliding door which looks like it might have come from another vehicle ??
13 ) Bulkhead squeaks and stops seats adjusting
14 ) Small dent near bottom of OS rear door.
15 ) Driver's seat belt is frayed more than I would like.
16 ) Carpet/Rubber mat wanted for rear load area.

Jobs done/parts bought

Job 1

Good 2nd hand one supplied by seller - yet to fit.

Job 2

2nd supplied by seller - and now working

Job 3

Replacement wheel supplied by seller - yet to fit.

Job 4

I've purchased a new front end plastics in the correct colour and including grill for £40 - yet to fit

Job 5

I believe that the NS bulb holder has been put in upside down - I will be checking this out when I refit the front end plastic

Job 8

I have purchased 2.5 litres of the surface preparation stuff that turns rust black and further protects the area. I already own 2 large Dynatrol stone chip paint cans & 4 large Dynatrol black rust protector. I will apply the surface prep then the stone chip and rust protector over the next week or so.

Job 9

I have purchased a set of "sport" wheel arches covers for £80 on Ebay. I will remove the rust that is there and use the protector (8) to protect the area before spraying it but then covering the wheel arches with the "sport" covers.

Job 10

I am hovering over a set of leatherette covers on Ebay. I quite like how the covers look with the mark 7 seats and as the foam is damaged I'm toying with purchasing both the drivers/passengers seats for a mark 7 and covering them, the headrests and arm rest although I am also looking at the possibility of covering the existing seats. This is the link to the ebay advert -http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-TRANSIT-MK7-2006-VAN-SEAT-COVER-MADE-TO-MEASURE-BLACK-QUILTED-A120A-/251352667413?hash=item3a85c95515:g:M0sAAOSwDlBTww0D and this is how they look:

Image

Job 13

Looking at fitting a replacement metal bulkhead.

Job 16

Looking at fitting a replacement load area mat. There are lots on Ebay from newer vans but none yet for Mk6.
I've rebuilt a Defender, several motorcycles and quite a bit to both a Mk6 & 7 Transit. Now bought a new Custom and just doing a few small bits to it.

Will do thanks.

Not sure why it isn't opening readily...

Should it lock with the first press of the remote as the other doors do?

Is the second press a deadlock and that is working but not the normal lock?

Yes one press locks everything, a second press dead locks everything. One unlock only the front doors, 2 presses the rear doors

OK so only dead lock working....

If weather is with me then I'm hoping to get everything off the list sorted by next weekend. Need to buy a dash stereo surround and see how I can modify it to take a double DIN as well.

You might need a new middle hinge on the side loading door.

Thanks. I've just purchased another side door of the same colour cheaper than painting my old one. I'll ask for the hinge and then I should have spares of all the possible problem parts. I've also got two replacement rear minus of the same colour with Windows :-)

Well the headlight aim is now working. Since rebuilding the front end it is now aiming correctly so it must have been something to do with that. I've also changed the wheel.

So looking at the issues with the side door..... I think Andy is right about the middle hinge which is either sticking or has a weak spring - I'll try some lube on it today and investigate the central locking thing too. I've also got some jobs to do on the Landrover so they will have to share my time (new heated rear window, set of wheel spacers, new headlining.......)

I'm seriously considering going a lot further from a clean up to a bit of a restoration. I'm thinking of doing the other sill, replacing the other four arches and the front wings then replaying those areas plus the rear doors and side door. As I'm getting the doors separately they can be painted off the vehicle with a pair of new wings..... The arches I can carefully do in situ and paint just the arch as it will not be too noticeable with the arch covers anyway. Then with a new bumper (as it's tatty) the van should look very clean.

Which bits are you changing and what condition are the parts that are coming off?

I am interested!
