1980 phase 1 mk2 camper

Postby MRspivvy » Fri Sep 07, 2007 8:45 pm

she's been in storage for the last year whilst I made space for it- now I have finally got started on the restoration. first job is getting it stripped for a bare metal respray- The previous spray job was a quick blow over with lots of flaking.only one or two little welding jobs to do, then the re-styled interior can go in.
sorry about the crap picture quality

I was never happy with the original interior and side facing passenger seats. they were wooden with no provision for seat belts for the kiddies, so I am fitting a reclining mazda bongo bench which also converts to a double bed. I have spent the last year getting bits and pieces together for it, and it will feature chrome wheels, sidepipes,on board air system for truck horns, inverter, microwave, tv/dvd, split charge system for leisure battery, with the original cooker sink etc.
I dont like the original mirrors, anyone know what's available instead?

yes, I have some side pipes. not immaculate but they polish up ok and they were cheap compared to new ones. I was thinking of the "west coast" mirrors like you said, but I had heard they werent very good for vision too... I am thinking of measuring up some HGV mirrors and arms in work, very good rear vision and I can fit a michelin man then too!
I am aiming to have this done for about this time next year..famous last words

I dont know what they are, the guy I bought them off had them for a cobra and never fitted them. I still need to get some chrome elbows to attach them to the downpipes, custom chrome do them but I cant bring myself to pay what they're asking

yes this is something I am weary of.. I thought maybe 2nd hand eminox stacks as a cheap alternative ( they are stainless and last forever) but even 2nd hand they are mega expensive and also way too big. gonna be running into ground clearance problems at the very least.
is there some kind of laquer you can spray onto chrome to protect it?

if you don't want the original mirrors I will have them when you replace them! How about a swap for a transit camper sofa/bed our of my Mk1 SWB, now a van? Also there is a door mounted mirror available from the states. I don't have a pic but have a look on the custom sites. We had door mirrors on d shaped arms our Mk1 and they were OK but never looked quite right on a panel van.

Got some more bits for it- will now be having deep day van type windows and a pukka mk2 transit front spoiler. a bloke in dorset is breaking a left hooker swb hymer (panel van) conversion.terminally rotten and no camper bits left on it but it has an overdrive box and lift up rear door. if anyone wants his email PM me.
