Replacement for the Hijet.

Postby kentgpz11 » Mon Apr 26, 2010 7:42 pm

Finally bought a Transit via Ebay on Saturday.
We were originally looking for a SWB low roof that would fit under the 2 metre barrier at the local tip, then we found out that the tax & insurance is no more expensive for a LWB semi high roof, so thats what we went for. I'll use the car if I need to go to the tip.
The higher roof should save me a few bangs to the head....hopefully.

See the Hijet scowling in the background?

Two tone paintjob, pure class.

The door bottoms are made of metal, not filler.

I'ts been a work van, so it's filthy inside. But we will clean it thoroughly & check everything is working as it should, before we use it.
This isn't a problem as the Hijet still has tax, MOT & insurance until the end of May. So we'll carry on using that until the Transit is ready.

Things that need doing....
Fuel pump has a slight leak.
Needs a full service.
Speedo not working.
Hazard lights only work on LHS.
Number plate lights not working.
Door key is very worn & won't open drivers door.

Also a couple of times yesterday, I turned the ignition key & nothing (no ignition lights or anything). Then I pulled the bonnet release & everything came back on. I assume it's a bad earth, so I'll check the wiring.

I'm sure the list will grow & I will be pestering you all constantly for answers & solutions to my problems.
But I'm quite pleased with the van.....at the moment.

I had a K reg for a while that only came with one key, which was well worn. I got a full set of locks including ignition barrel off feepay, at reasonable money aswell. Easy enough for the DIY-er to fit too. Not sure if yours has a coded key though ???

That lock set doesn't include the side door unfortunately. :(
The van has had a new ignition fitted with a good key, so I really only need the door locks. Which means the keys wouldn't need coding. :)

What & leave it there?

I'm hoping to tidy it up, get it MOT'd & sell it. :?

The heater/blower only works on the top speed, so I assume the heater resistor is f***ed as I had the same problem on my old Mondeo.
It took me ages to find the damned thing, didn't help having the van parked with drivers side right up against a wall. So I had to get in through passenger side, lay across seats on my back then hang down under steering wheel with a torch.
It took 3 attempts to actually find it. Did Ford put it there for a laugh?
It would appear I have some knuckle scraping & swearing ahead of me.
I've bought a new fuel lifter pump, oil,air &fuel filters & a Haynes manual. So it's bound to p**s down all weekend.

? The heater resister is normally in the engine bay area. Either stuck to the wiper motor plate or near the headlight. :?

Update.

I've removed the ply lining, as it was damaged, loose & very noisy when driving.

[url]Image/url]

I also swept up a bucket full of crap from underneath the plywood.

[url]Image/url]

Looks a lot better, just need to fill in all the bloody rivet holes now. & paint the bare metal bits, (Rustoleum or Hammerite smooth, which is best?)

Replaced the towbar electrics & socket as the old one had no flap to prevent water getting in & all the wires were just twisted together & taped up behind the socket.

Bought a new lock set from Ebay & fitted it, so all doors now unlock with key. :D Hardest part was removing window winder handles from front doors, after about 10 mins of struggling & swearing I got my wife to do it, (took her about 30 secs.)

Heater resistor on it's way from Ebay, (have replaced the badly corroded connector with a shiny scrapyard one.)

Hazard lights now working, just wiggled switch & hey presto.

Thats about all for now.

Question can I soak the headlining, or will it turn to mush? It's filthy. :(

I thought that had gone on mine and is a bit of a pain to get to, but as i found out it turned out to be a dodgy wire in the connecting block  so check that first, nice van m8 :) 8)

When I took the old resistor out it was all cracked & rusty. I tried an old Fiesta resistor I had in the garage & it worked fine, so I knew the resistor was f***ed. I replaced the connector, as that was rusty too.

Got a bit more done.
Removed seats, mats & trim to check condition of floor, it's a lot worse than the back, but it's not terrible.

Image

Nothing that a wire brush & a tin of Hammerite won't fix.

This may need a little more than that.

Image

Fitted heater resistor, now have 3 speed heater. :)

Replaced number plate light loom as wires had snapped where it goes from door to body.

Mate came round & fitted new fuel lifter pump & fuel filter, (I thought it best to get some help with it, as I read some threads on here saying it can be a pain to fit.)

New oil & filter.

New air filter.

Thats all for now.
