I'm sure the N/A is 19:1 and the turbo is 18.3:1

the extra compression will allow more air/fuel mixture per power stroke.......
However if the boost level (and air flow) are too high for the compression the egts can exceed the safe limits.....
Which ends up melting/cracking things.......

I could be wrong though :S

I know the turbo di is 18.3:1

But I thought I read the N/A is 19:1...
(could be in the manual I read it)

Yes maroon coloured haynes manual :P

unless the haynea is wrong :P

not sure if its of any interest to anyone, but the LR Tdi (2.5 direct injection turbo with a non crossflow alloy head) has a CR of 19:1 as well...
Running a T25 sized turbo (.48 ar) at around 1bar boost (peak on a 200, continuous on a 300)

Max safe egt is 650*c

Quick update:

Video from the last 2 weeks: http://youtu.be/0Svz6PLhU34

I fitted the turbocharger to the van yesterday, working on the oil drain and boost hose today.
I'm using 5/8" hydraulic fittings for the turbo drain and the boost hose is going to be cobbled together from bits of pipe I have for now
Oil feed is taken from the oil pressure switch, I just removed it and screwed in my 1/8" adaptor instead. I'll fit an oil pressure gauge as well.

Video update:
http://youtu.be/aJOYA4RDofE

The inlet manifold is full of crap from the EGR so there is a shiny clean one going on instead. I'm keeping the throttle plate as an emergency stop in case my cheap turbo decides to spew oil
Space is tight for the exhaust, I might have to modify the bulkhead for clearance for the 3" pipe.
Also need to sort the back axle hopping, it pops out of 2nd gear when the wheels are spinning, it might only be the shocks.

Ford's data sheets say:
N/A is 20.8:1
85ps turbo is 19:1
100ps turbo is 18.3:1
115ps turbo is 18:1

IgorVigor wrote:Whaf exhaust will you be running?

Because a larger bore exhaust with no restrictions (so either no silencer or straight through) will lower the EGT's.....

And your big intercooler will keep the charge temp down which in turn will keep the egts down.....

Most of all though keep the smoke down a bit :P
I know a big plume from a turbo diesel looks good....but it will increase EGTs!

You could however.....fit a water injection system.....

my mate built his own water injection system, he used a jcb pressure switch (on a jcb it fits in the induction pipe to put a light on when pressure gets above a set point) to trigger a relay which switches a windscreen washer pump to feed water into his motor. (it is a BIG v8 yank running twin turbo's  )

Alright, calm down Robbie

I was only going off what I'd read

Seems various sources quote different compression ratios....oh well.....

mine will still be running the stock N/A Di compression ratio
