Had the van out over the weekend.

I have the temp sender correct for the gauge but finding the van is running almost cold.
The electric fans are adjustable and are not cutting in.
The rad is the is the granada one.
Thermostat is installed and working

Would it be that the grille on the granada is smaller allowing less air in....

Could I fit a smaller rad..

should I just cover a portition of the top of the rad to allow the water to heat up.

MK2 does have a lot of surface area, unlike the granny, so you could be right, but Ive not heard Luke mention it!!! you could look for a rad blind, that way you can open and close it from inside the cab, but its not been that cold there, has it?

my fans come in off a sierra cosworth sender and they reguarly are on (too frequent if anything) - my temp sits ok on the gauge :D

rather than fit a smaller rad why not blank half of it off with some cardboard to see if that makes a difference - but i doubt thats the problem

i have heard that not enough back pressure on the exhaust can make them run cold

Thanks for the quick replies.
I have the standard exhaust system less the cats up to the last box and then a larger tail pipe.
So hopfully that is not the issue.
When I read your thread luke and saw the pic of your van in the garage with a similar size rad i said i would ask the question.
How can I check the actual temp in the top of the rad to allow the fans come on .
I was just going to let it run in the drive way and see when they came on but would like to know the actual temp in degrees to ensure proper heating/cooling as I was told that running too cold can make them more thirsty and run abit off

Hoping it is just an inaccurate gauge but would like to be sure :D

Wow ! What a tasty van. The end result of the way this way van looks is a credit to you. I think it looks fantastic. Cool wheels.

What diff have you got on it ? How does it drive ? A lot of power now huh ?
It's not WHO is right it's WHAT is right.

I don't care what you think of my Tranny. To me she's solid gold.

Thanks

The diff is quite high as there was a 1600 xflow petrol engine in it and on the log book said it was allowed to tow 1500kg.At the moment top end is not an issue  but yeah loads of power.

Want to upgarde the axle and am looking at a few different options f150(lukes) Or a newer transit axle, or maybe just a better ratio diff on my own axle,A bit more head scratching yet I think.

what you could do with is a mechanical capilery type gauge - even just to plumb in as a temperary measure to check out your own gauge - that way you wont get a discremency between the gauge and the sender

something like this :D

I started doing the ifs conversion over christmas and have been asking some questions on the ifs thread. So far I have the subframe mounted. The steering column in and connected.I refitted the power steering pump and tensioner and fitted a new fan belt.I have to get the new power steering pipes made to the correct length and fit the fluid bottle.I also am redrilling the hubs to accept bmw alloys I have which includes welding up the hubs and skiming them after the drilling the new pcd.The one thing I should have done was weld the shocks to the subframe to keep the camber/castor angle.I am going to take some measurments from a mk4/5 to see how accurate I can get it.Also I have asked luke for a couple of close up pics of the shock tops on his ifs (thanks)to see the mounting position..I hope to put up some pictures in the next couple of days.
