Just having a New Year review of this thread to remind myself. That really is an awesome bit of work so far Tim. Hopefully plenty of 'black stuff' inside those panels too like you did on my Mk3?

A bit of an update people, finally sorted the front spring hangers :!:

I had remembered reading on here about converting Mk3 front spring hangers to suit a Mk2 and decided to give it a go.
Got there in the end but I have to say it was a very inefficient use of workshop time :!:
Every dimension of the Mk3 hanger is different to the Mk2, the chassis is shallower, (requiring the hanger to be 'lowered'), the 'cut out' for the front cross member is both 'deeper' and 'longer', the shape of the hanger where it meets the underside of the chassis rail is different, the shape of the hanger 'nose' is also different, even the diameter of the spring bolt is different :!: Pictures below;

Here we see the modified item on the left;
Image

Here we have a view looking from the front, again the Mk2 part is on the left;
Image

Another view with the Mk2 version in the foreground, you can see that the top flange is flat on the Mk2, this part curves upwards on the Mk3, part of this upper flange has been removed to clear the 'bulge' in the inner wing for the steering box;
Image

Here we see the Mk2 item on top of the original Mk3 one, you can clearly see the different size/shape of the forward cut out to fit around the front cross member;
Image

Here we see a view from underneath, you can see the difference in overall length and the differing shape of the hanger 'nose', Mk2 part is on the left;
Image

I can definitely say that I will not be doing this again, so much so that I have drawn up some tooling to produce these from scratch.
Once available I will post up information, pictures and prices in the Mk1/2 Body panels thread, here;

The left hand hanger has now been fitted to the van, next job to remove the right hand one and the steering box :D

Wow - totally different. Well done Tim, but as you say, easier to make from scratch!

Just a little update, the left front spring hanger has been installed, the top of the left chassis rail has also been repaired and properly fastened to the spring hanger;

To ensure accurate enlightenment of this part, all the manufactured parts, both lower headlamp panels and the front cross member, were re-fitted using the 'self-drill' fixings while the spring hanger was welded in place. Full welding could be carried out once the cross member had been removed. Here you see that the chassis top plate is spot welded to both the chassis rail and the spring hanger, once again the spot welder made a tidy job of the repair;
Image

The next task is to remove the Right Hand Front Spring Hanger, a lot of rot can be seen hear in the chassis upper plate, this will require the removal of the steering box and the steering box mounting plate to provide the necessary access. Here you see that the steering box has been removed, the full extent of the corrosion is now visible;

Hopefully lots of 'black stuff' inside to ensure this doesn't need doing again for a while! :lol:
Excellent job so far Tim. Was good to have a quick inspection when I popped in with the other bits.

Good to touch base with you also Colin.

Now I am happy with the Left Chassis Leg, we can spray inside it, with enough pressure we might get as far as the rear spring hangers :lol:
