The leaking windows in the luton were becoming a thorn in my side now, so i decided to take them out and mastic them back in properly, but every repair ive done previously the mastic shrinks back and allows water in.

Image

As you can see the join in the rubber is at the bottom and has shrunk back over the years. I tried turning the rubber around but the window is an uneven shape and the rubber wont form the shape if you turn it round.

So i then decided to cut new windows and bond them onto the outside of the window hole using no rubber.

I first made up a template

Image

And bought some new perpex from B & Q and cut outaround the template

Image
Image

Plenty of mastic and pressed into place with a few screws just to hold it down

Image

And same with other side

Hoping for the best now.

I went to check on the van on Friday to see if there were any leaks in the windows after we had torrential downpours, and so far so good, everything is dry which is a result, but looked in the wardrobe and the ceiling was soaking wet and the wall was wet where it was dripping down.
I just walked away muttering under my breath that the van has to go, i cant carry on if i cant stop the water ingress.

Well anyhow i went back up there on monday and looked in the wardrobe and it was dry! How long has that been going on and i havnt noticed?

The last lot of repairs i did was to fix flashing to the roof joins and down the side of the roof, which i thought had done the job.

I have now bought of a tin of Evercryl roof repair paint, its a resin based fibre reinforced one coat paint, so ive given the whole roof a good covering of that and hope for the best.

Ive heard good reports of this paint so it should stop the leak. If it doesnt then, i got to think outside of the box and think where else it could be running from. Heres hoping!

Wow I've just read all 10 pages of this, and have to say your doing a bloody fantastic job.

Let us know how you get on with that roof paint, as my work luton keeps leaking, even after patching it up, so that could be the way forward for me.

Im taking a chance on the windows staying water tight and have now carpeted the walls of the luton to finish it off.

The corner pieces were from the original van and tidy it up nicely, i need to source a some plastic corner angle to fit in between the wall and roof lining, or maybe something else will do the job.

The different colour on the roof lining adjacent to the windows is some spare roof lining i got out of another van to cover up the tears, im not to worried about this as most of the time you would not be able to see in the luton for bedding etc.

The good lady has done me proud and made some curtains and covered the pelmets. The cheapest way to do this was to buy a complete curtain set from Ikea and then cut them down to there sizes, cheaper than buying material on its own.

I found some oak effect plastic corner beading from B&Q and its fits just nicely between the join of the roof lining and the wall, makes all the difference i think.

The roof lining was pretty torn around the skylight

So i cut some 100mm strips from the carpet roof covering and and made a border around the opening, stuck it with contact adhesive.

Looking quite tidy now, better than i thought it would actually.

Fixed some chequer plate to the rear door today to protect it.

Image

I took the cardboard up off the floor and gave the lino a good scrub and used some low adhesive carpet protector to keep it clean. I had to move sites a couple of months ago and where it is parked now used to be a scrap yard so its impossible to keep the floor clean.

Image

Checked for leaks today after a mini monsoon, and no leaks in the wardrobe, so the paint must be doing its job.

There was how ever a small leak still coming in from the the luton window. I might carefully scribe a line around the window frame onto the plastic, mask it up, and paint it with the roof paint then paint it black, hopefully it will look better than its sounds!!!

Looking at the luton and the windows in particular, it always looks unsightly, so i got the good lady to make up some nets to fit onto the curtain rail to hide the bad points.

She done a pretty good job as well, as the nets had to be tapered at the ends to stay level as they turned the corner. Looks pretty good i think.

Image

Originally the bunk had a fold down flap at the front too make the bunk bigger and to stop things falling out when folded up.
I didnt want this back on as i have no need for a bigger bunk, but it did look a bit bare, so i bought a lenght of oak Conti Board and cut a scollop out of the middle, fixed some edging to it and fixed that in place. Looks the part now and tidys it up no end.

And now for the more serious bit, looked at the window frame to see where the water was getting in, and after a few prods with my finger it wasnt a mystery any more. Thinking that i might be better to get a section of frame and replace rather than patch, so if anybody has a section i can use get in touch.

Well...........Thats the interior done now!!!!

I cant really beleave i done it all , looking back at the old photos i cant beleave i DID do it, as it seems a distant memory to all the hard work that i put in.

To transform this.....

To this......

With some of this along the way.......

I have now started to concentrate on an mot  I took all the wheels off and checked the tyres, i needed to replace 5 inc the spare.
I had a leaky wheel cylinder on one side that i replaced, both drag link ends were perished, replaced them.
Greased up the king pins and i replaced the leads , condenser and points, cleaned and regapped the plugs.
Ordered a new washer pump, as that was knackered and am looking for a set of wiper arms.
I got a feeling some welding might need doing to the front cross member but ill let the mot find all that needs welding.
I bought a good used bonnet as the leading edge has fell off now, but i got a small bit of masticing to do to the luton window, so ill wait till i done that, so i can stand on the old bonnet.
