Big thanks again for comments :D

Snow's all gone now :(

Image

Anyway, good reason to get back to "progress". I've been searching through old pics which might be interesting / helpful. Here are a few of the bulkhead cut-outs I had to make to fit the engine.

The engine is positioned as high as possible (for maximum clearance between the sump and the beam axle) and as far back as possible (for clearance behind the radiator). This necessitated two bulkhead cut-outs. The main one is in the clutch pedal area (clutch obviously not needed with the auto transmission):

Image

Image

On the left of this picture you can see where the auto-shift cable goes through the bulkhead. The floor-mounted shift mechanism was sourced from a Ford Explorer which had the correct P-R-D-2-1 pattern.

A minor cut-out was also required just above the rear of the engine where the intake to the heater is. This pic is from the inside with the heater removed.

Image

In this pic you can see the cut-out just above the rear of the engine (and a stray hand coming through the other cut-out :? :? )

Image

This last one shows where the gear lever used to be. The mount for the 4WD selector is adjacent to it. Removing the gear lever has meant much more footroom for the centre seat passenger.

Sailed through MoT yesterday, no advisories, third year in a row :D :D (Mr Smug)

Latest development - Front Air Assisted Suspension

Fitted a pair of Dunlop 170/2 "Bellow Air Springs" in order to regain the correct ride height at the front.

Image

Image

The Air Bellows replace the bump stops. They are mounted between 6mm steel plates, single M12 bolt at the bottom (as per the bump stop), with a fabricated bracket at the top:

Image

I have run the air lines to schrader valves at the rear of the passenger footwell. I have a small compressor on board which raises the rear mast, and the next job is to connect this up so I can raise and lower the front suspension at the flick of a switch rather than with a foot pump!

Image

For anyone who is interested, this is the Dunlop 170/2 data sheet:

Image

From the SVO brochure, I have established that clearance under the transfer box should be 375mm. Pumping the bellows up to give the recommended static height of 135mm gives me 385mm under the transfer box. Just about perfect :D .

Thanks Alan. Not bad for a 22 year old. The body and paintwork is all original (other than fresh chequers and resprayed wheels), so I can't take any credit for it looking this way, other than a bit of TLC and a lot of elbow grease! I am fortunate that it's in great shape even when you look closer....

I feel a bit guilty showing these pics when I know the enormous bodywork repair jobs many members have to go through just to keep their vans on the road. I am forever in awe of the numerous bodywork wizards across the forum who perform miracles converting rust and rot into gleaming masterpieces. No doubt I'll need to develop some of those skills over time, but for now I can concentrate on the mechanical side which is what I most enjoy.

Thanks DaisyLee. My bin is now full of empty T-cut bottles

The ride on-road is super-smooth (not that it wasn't before). Maybe slightly firmer than normal. No advantage having them on-road if you're happy with your ride height.

Off-road, I've got them a bit firm at the moment. I am experimenting with different pressures - trying to find the balance between a safe ride height (keeping a good distance between my heavy engine and the front differential), and an acceptable ride quality. Pumping them right up gives enormous clearance but a rock-hard ride, and vice-versa. The great thing about them is that they are infinitely adjustable over a wide range. At the moment, I adjust pressure manually via two shraeder valves. Ultimately I would like to have them connected to a compressor (as many motorhomes do) so that I can balance the ride height vs firmness "on the fly" and according to the conditions.

James, this basically the kit she has, but with only one shock, the adjuster normally goes in the dash top pod. I should have photos tomorrow
