right guys im back to the transits as my astra van blown !!

Front and rear crossmembers, spring hangers, steps and sills. To be honest you are best getting underneath and starting at one end and working your way along the van.

I bought a mk5 cheap had twin side doors etc and was a nice van to drive, when i removed the boarding there wasnt a floor . Might have some pictures still.

ive had a look around it today mark, and give inside of cab a good clean out, took plastic step up still solid underneath just some paint flaked off, going rust treat it wire brush it and hammerite the steps to protect them when i have the time to tidy them up before they do go through, took some pics will upload now

right guys today i have cleaned my interior and took plastic step covers up to see what i could find, pretty good still no holes and still nice and solid so going rust protect them and repaint them with some hammerite smooth when i have the time so it doesnt get any worse or go through. also checked sills alot of surface rust under sliding door see pic, going clean that and respray when weather picks up, and also some fresher doors on weekend see pic again

a bit more progress today been on van all day ripping out all the boards floor ply took the p**s had been screwed down through the floor, pretty impressed with the floor, couple of holes on rear corner behind arch like usual for transits, and little hole qat front off arch, n/s is fine no holes, rest is just a bit off surface rust, so will be getting it plated soon wont cost much as really small (see pics)

i think i have dropped on a pretty good one this time, hopefully have new doors to fit weekend make rear look neater

i would say it had a nice dent there at some point
also might be worth putting some paint on them welds

You going to plate/weld round the rear arches or fill for now?

haha good one lol, and i am goint to touch all the floor up and repaint arches and touch up the bits where the spots are and repaint sliding door step etc, doesnt look like there was a dent from inside or out, unless someone has just been messing about testing a spot welder on it lol, stranger things have happened

rear part has gone through where cross member is but crossmember is not rotted at all, so im going just plate it as its only small might aswell and i want to re board the floor out which im in two minds about as the mud and moisture collected under neath the one ive pulled up is shocking and will make it rot through, but yeah might aswell plate that part, and plate the small hole infront off arch , and touch up the surface rust on floor and around arches before it rots through

right im thinking off doing the cambelt myself but it will be the biggest thing i have ever done on an engine before, has anyone got an in detail guide or how to for this, with pics,

Also how many hours should it take ?? as i will be draining coolant and flushing and putting fresh in, taking rad off bumper etc, and also ile change other 2 belts while im there,

how much should i be looking at for parts ??? cambelt kit, and other 2 belts

also is it best replacing tensioner with the automatic one if not already been done, so basically buy the cambelt kit or just cambelt ??

Defo get a kit and change the tensioner. Follow the links in the guide to find an example of the auto one.

Euro par carps have 20% off at the moment (promo code ALL20) and free postage - maybe worth a look. Or simply try your local motor factors, buy a few bits and try for a discount. You can save your antifreeze but could be worth flushing with a hose and putting fresh in, depends on what drains out. You may want to consider changing the water pump at the same time as not that expensive.

just had a read through the whole thread and its given me the confidence to have a go at doing the timing belt myself, great how to, seems straight forward enough (I hope )

im thinking off sticking to manual tensioner though as automatic one looks a bit daunting, and it seems as though the manual ones have lasted this long and had no problems, prefer put on what was designed for the engine in first place, keep it standard , it might off been done but last owner didnt know if it has and he had it 12 months

Tensioners don't last forever, if you have an old type, probably been on since new.

New style one is super easy to set, couldn't be easier really.
Also, you won't find a kit with the old type, they are all of the new auto type.

But, you must do what you feel is best.

i will have to see how easy they are the fit, the link for the auto tensioner the images confuse me lol, there is an arrow on it to show you the way it should be, ile have another read once i get parts and am ready do it, going do a full service first and then do timing belt and coolant change once weather warms up
