nice work again 8) and well done on the MOT 8)

i've now got hold of a PAS box for mine 8) and i'll be fitting it soon :D mines off a Di and that has the pump the other side and all it uses for cooling is a run of pipe similar to yours, i think the pas box must need less cooling than the pas rack  :D

well i had the van on its first long journey towing. i was doing a drift demo at the bhp ford show at lydden hill. i done a few bits with it last week.

i replaced the drivers seat with this recaro from an rs turbo. makes a huge difference for long journeys.

Image

i also fitted up the back with a spare tool chest i had and used some ply wood i had left over from another job to build up some storage around it.

Image

id say i done about 1200 miles for the weekend with only one issue which i was able to sort roadside thankfully. the drivers side engine mount tore away and dropped/wedged dropping the lump a couple of inches which led to the bottom rad hose getting nicked by the alternator fins. after some head scratching i repaired the hose by cutting a small piece off the alloy handle of the jack!!i just cut the hose at the damaged part and used the tube as a joiner. i had a couple of jubilee clips spare.

Image

even though the mount was wedged i strapped it up as good as i could just in case.

this problem occured near swindon on the way back to the boat in holyhead. i had no problems after this and the rig flew it home.

it was a great weekend but a lot of miles!!

love the mount bodge 8) 8) proper ingenuity

but you should get some ply on the sides of the van  or at least stick some carpet on you dont want to spoil such a top van with something falling over in the back and putting a nasty dint in :(

yes, thats the next plan, and im thinkin bout mounting a wheel rack on the right hand side to free up some space on the floor.

i had a couple of hours to spare over the weekend so i fitted the 5 speed box. ive been getting round to this for a while now!

its the quite rare (im told) type 9 box as found in some mk3s with the selector mechanism coming off the side of the top plate leaving the gear stick coming up in the original spot so no mods to the floor.

Image

first job was to remove the old box and check the condition of the clutch which was fine so i fitted it back up ready for the t 9 box to go in.

Image

the box went in fine, only the mount was a bit further back which was taken up by the slots in the crossmember. i had to space down the mount a few mm with a couple of nuts as the box was sitting a little high when the mount was flush leaving the gearstick retainer tight against the floor.

Image

only other issues were the reverse light wires needed lenghtening a bit for the switch and the speedo cable was also too short for the type 9 speedo drive which is further back on the box. ive got a mk3 di broken with a cable type mt 75 and the cable from this done the job perfectly (gotta love these fords!!)

Image

i took her for a spin and all seems good. revs seem lower at cruising speed which should help a bit. gear shift is a bit sloppy compared to the 4 spd but ill live with that. ill be towing with her again next weekend so ill know for sure then if it was a worthwhile mod.

Nice work - and VERY nice van! Did you sort the engine mount as well?

A quick question about the Air Filter you have, on Aircooled VW's due to the long Manifolds Carb Icing is a real issue, so fitting anything other then the stock Air Filter with the correct Hot Air Pick-up pipes isn't really advisable, you've got a pancake type filter on your Transit, I'm assuming because the manifolds that much shorter you dont get any Carb Icing issues with a filter like that on a Transit/Pinto engine?

yes, mate i replaced the mount with a spare i had first.

i put that entire manifold and twin choke weber on just for the fun as i had it kicking around but it doesent seem to be making any difference power wise. im actually going to put the old setup back on with the hot air pipe as i think the van ran better if anything with it.

after some thinking about what engine to upgrade to for a bit more power. i ended going for a turbo di. i was very keen on a 24v cosworth at first but as ill be doing a lot of long runs towing i figured i needed some economy to go with the power!! i got a complete engine and box from a 00 smiley turbo van on the bay with the added bonus that its already converted to a 146 pump. hope its a lucky one!! only visual fault i could see was one exhaust manifold stud sheared in the head and a couple more missing causing a lot of soot at the back of the head and manifold. i got a new gasket and made a start this eve. luckily i got the broken stud out and started cleaning. i also took off the egr pipe and will make a couple of blanking plates. i plan to get it all as near ready as possible and have most of the bits needed before starting the transplant.

i had a look at the injectors to try and determine what power the engine is. couldnt see any colour on the injectors but seen this number....374-fb 3371 ol 99 mean anything i wonder???

pics to follow.

Indeed, A broken stud can really ruin your day! I have one stuck in the side of the head but was unable to get a grip onto it. I might try again with a stud extracter. Is it easier to do if the engine is hot?
