My new V6 Project. A sad update!!

It's not possible to change the heater box to a mk5 one when changing the dash you have to make do with the mk3/4 one already in the van because the bulkhead is shaped completly different. I thought about cutting out the bulkhead from the mk5 and welding it into the mk4 but that was too much work.

I just need to get some universal air ducting and direct the air vents to the heater box because the old venting won't work with the mk5 dash.

Looks like someone has spent a lot of time on your van as the dashboard swap isn't as easy as it seems!

I see your concerns, but anything is possible, you just need to trawl the scrappies with the bits you want to fit in hand and see what there is about....thats what I'm gona do

Well last nights task was to make a new air box as it had no air filter at all, while I was at it I made a new gear stick too as the original one was loose.

The filter box is made from a sheet of ally 1.6mm, drew around the air mass meter base plates then drilled and cut the relevant holes, then I used one of those 'mesh grill' thingies, cut it to shape and moulded it around a Rover 800 air filter, then bent it around the back of the ally base plate so it all holds in place and put some wide insulating tape around the edges.





The gear stick is made from the original Granada stick and a Sierra stick, got some threaded bar (internal and external) and a piec of 22mm copper tube, welded the bar to each of the two sticks, slid the copper tube over the bottom half and then screwed in the top half, once all tightened I then painted it with Aluminium paint

Just in the middle of converting to power steering on it at the mo, I wondered why the steering was excessively stiff, now I know.... The right hand ball joint is seized solid, I honestly cant spin the hub round at all....not even with a 4ft bar

When the rack is done its getting disks and pads too.......oh my poor pocket!!

Power steering all sorted

But what a crapper of a job, I didnt realise until I had got it all in that the locking nuts on the rack were seized I just about pulled my nuts out trying to move them then it took 20mins 3 ciggies and cuppa to realise I could just cut them off as I had got the ones on the old rack Anyway its done and drives 100% better Ran out of time to do the disks and pads though, later in the week for them me thinks

For anyone thinking of changing their rack by the way......... drop the two bolts out of the front drivers side wishbone(bottom arm) and push it out of the way, it will save hours of struggling

Fit a new Clutch quadrant, and to make sure id definately wont slip the ratchet I have used the old spring as well as the new one

Fit Sports steering wheel.

Fit the drivers side Recaro seat

Cool looking motor dude . . ingenious way to build the airbox, garage leftovers?, I try not to chuck anything out...consequently have a back garden littered with bits, parts and sheds

looking great rover. nice interior too looks like the same wheel i fitted to mine- i found it too close to the sticks (not deep enough dish) so i took it off

The airbox was stuff from the shed plus £7 for the mesh grill, only used half of it......now to find summat to make with the other half

The steering wheel is deceptive in that pic Luke, the Boss is quite long and it sits only 4mm closer to the stalks than the original and it works the indicator cancel when you turn it too
