thanks, that makes sense
i am hoping i dont need to chop out the window frame on mine, but if so that way would mean i dont need to cut the guard up.
find out when i remove the windscreen one day.

I was quite wary of taking the screen out to see what lies beneath, but it was easy to remove and a lot easier than i thought replace it, seeing as i did it on my own.

Thanks Luke and deankdx,

Ive ordered the paint Re-paint its called, its a self leveling paint that you roll on or spray, i am going to roller it on and see how its turns out. 2 litres will be ample for the chassis cab and 500mm of thinners, cost just under 70 quid.

Ive got a good bonnet in the garage so i will experiment on that first i think, the fella recons 3 coats will be enough, rubbing down between coats.

I think however far i get with it, i shall bring it to Transitmania this year and get someone to bring my other van along.

Getting close now.

Rubbed down the front grill and lower panel and gave it a coat of primer as well as the drivers door, looks like a different van now.

Image

Image

Also spent an age filling in all the dents on the front of the luton and gave that a coat of satin white, dont really know why painted it white, as its gonna be grey like the rest of the body.

Image

But do one job and fukc another, i got some overspray on the luton windows, so i was rubbing hard on them with white spirit to remove paint and the perspex starting cracking on both of them.

Image

Image

My fault really as the old perspex was 6mm and i only replaced it with 3mm, thats all i could get in B&Q, so now i have to dig it all out and start again with thicker perpex. I thought i had seen the last of them windows. :x Grrrr

All in all tho its looking real nice and cant wait to get top coat on, but the luton comes first as i have to tread all over the old bonnet to do it.

Well i never thought i would be be doing these windows again.

Image

On reflection, i went about it all wrong by fitting 4mm Perspex. I was in such a rush to stop the leaks that i used the only stuff i could get at B & Q on the day, rather than planning ahead and ordering the right stuff. Im using 6mm now.

Image

Image

In some respects im glad i used silicone mastic before as it was quite easy to remove, but im using Tigerseal now, a polyurethane sealant and adhesive which gives a permanent but flexable bond.

Image

The screws are temporary as the pane does not sit flat on the rim, this is why the other stuff cracked as it was under contant strain and was not thick enought to cope.

One its dry i will mask up and and go all around the edge to give it an appearance of a window rubber.

Image

Also i fitted a new barrel in the driver door handle and rubbed down and sprayed the handle in satin black, looks like new now. Just the other one to do now as well as the mirrors and arms and wiper arms.

Once the sealant had dryed, i then masked up around the plexy and around the surround.

Image

Put plenty of sealer on amd spread it around with the bottom of the mastic tube that wash squashed flat a little and removed masking tape.

Image

Image

You can now see the difference in thickness of the plexy

The roof and the underside of the Luton were always a problem, or thought it would be. There is so little room between the two, that i didnt know if i could get any paint in there with a roller, and seeing as i am doing a colour change, it needed to be done.

I spent an age trying to rub it all down,, and making all sorts of contraptions with a sanding block fixed to the end to get in there and get years of dirt and overspray smooth.

Image

I bought some Re-Paint primer, thinned it down a little and applied with a gloss roller.

I had to bend the roller handle up a little, and attach to the end of a broom, to get all the way in and across the back, i just had enough room to do it.

Once the primer is on it shows up all the little dings and holes, so a bit of filler and rub it down next week.

Image

Then to put the van back in its hiding place, they dont give me much room to store it, i can barely open the door to get in it.

Hooray! A nice weekend. All this rain is no good for a primed body, so i need to get some top coat on before it rains again.

So i rubbed down the primer with 320 grit and got ready to apply top coat. Slightly thinned the paint and applied with a roller.
Its not as easy as it looks, and you get a lot of air bubbles and runs. Infact it looked shite when i was finished, and i was beginning to regret rollering it on.

Image

Image

Image

So back on you tube to brush up on my skills.

It seems i had the paint a little too thick. The thinner it is, the better it self levels.

Today then i rubbed down with 400 grit wet and dry to smooth all the air bubbles out, but more importantly the runs. Trouble is, the runs were not quite dry, and it took an age to flatten them down, and of course this was taking the paint back to base coat.

Image

Image

So this time it took it slower, thinned the paint some more and only rollered in one directing, going upwards.

Image

Image

The finish looks better than it actually is, i still need to flatten down and apply another coat yet, but i do like the colour.
