Its only since October 2012 that the IVA applies

The last trailer I built was finished in September 2012 (No honestly it was... i'm not making it up, it was moving cars in October)

I would be looking to use a trailer axle rather than a transit axle because you will get brakes that work properly with auto reverse...

VOSA don`t exist anymore  ha, I`ve been so busy trying to get my van working for the past ... ages, that I missed that

Agreed, trailer axle would be far easier :D could even get a stripped caravan trailer and adapt it to fit the transit body on, would sort out loads of issues.

Yes DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) replaced DSA & VOSA

IVA inspection fees for trailers depend on axle weight.

01 - axle weight up to 750kg - £70
02 - axle weight from 750kg to 3500kg - £70
03 - axle weight over 3.5t to 10t - £145

If trailer is deemed non-compliant. Re-inspection fee is £14 for 01 & 02 trailers, £29 for 03 & 04 trailers

So for a home build, im gonna have to have a IVA test. Could all get a bit complicated.
I had thought about a caravan or similar to build it on and have hub adapters made or redrills for the wheels but i wanted to keep the rims all the same so they can be swapped if necessary.

not if you use a caravan chassis or just say it was built years ago - you'd proberbly be able to redrill the caravan hubs :D

Older caravan chassis were made of steel (1960, 70 & 80`s), so welding to your mk3 rear ends real easy, later caravan chassis (1990 onwards) were `Alko` alloy chassis so not so easy to weld to steel and usually have caravan bodies bolted to them :D

Just found this old mock up for my trailer, means making another roof spoiler and a couple of sets of lights, although I have collected a few parts for doing the job, wheels and tyres, new arch panels etc. its a way off yet. Need to find myself some space to make it in
Image

Make 2 and you can do it in my garden lol

Van has been off the road for some months while I tidy things up a bit. Cleaned up the engine bay, a lick of paint and sort out the wiring. Pulled most of the ancillaries off to get good access and hand painted the bay, plus repainted a few bits. Image
Also thought it was about time to fit the headlight washer bottle, pipework and pump. When I fitted the injection metering head, it had to go where the wash bottle was, so I moved the bottle on the other side of the bay. The Mk3 headlight/screen bottle is so much bigger and just wouldn't fit in the space, so I tried a Mk4 bottle, success! Just a little smaller, it fitted reasonably well

Image
Pipework was fitted to grille jets and I couldn't use the reinforcement brackets due to my modified grille, but seemed sturdy enough.
Image
The headlight pump only works when the headlights are switched on, so a relay was wired in.
Sadly, I haven't tested them yet due to my next BIG problem...

The BIG problem... with the show season starting with North Weald in a few weeks, I noticed a thin rust crack in the paint of the front cross member, so I thought a little poke with a screwdriver would show a break in the paint.... No! You know whats coming now, don't you!!! Nearly lost my bl**dy hand as the screwdriver disappeared into the section!
Yes rotten, so I had a good look over and it seemed to be the only area affected, but had to come off, quite easy using a spot weld drill, only took a couple of hours, great I thought!

A quick test fit and after a little fettling all looks good, oh no, not yet, that doesn't doesn't happen in the real world...
