Big plans for this weekend, but scuppered by the blistering heat. Much too hot to work in, so i did what i could in the evening as it got cooler.

I rubbed down the rear panel and applied primer, now it is fully undercoated, it shows up all the dents and holes better than before.

Image

Time to fit the rear step properly now.

Image

And now to fit the rear lights with new lenses

Image

So the next task will be to fill most of the dents and holes and paint the near side body skirt.
I have managed to source another corner body moulding of ebay, but i had to hold his horse while he adjusted his mask cause he robbed me blind for it. I had no choice tho.

The panel came today and glad to say its the right one, that was an expensive mistake throwing the old one away.

OMG This thread is amazing. cant believe how much work you've put into this. The new interior looks great I wish my C.I was this sound!!! Am particually envious of posh loo!!
Weve just spent 2 weeks in France in our C.I where the rear lights got smashed...You were correct re those lenses when we'd removed all the sandwich bags & bodge tape off the remnants of ours i could see theones you suggested were the right ones on ebay for £4.95 so have bought them. Thanks so much for this.
The fibre glass rear lower trim thingeys (where rear lights are) are a bit cracked like yours & now i have a step by step to fixing them.
My husband had made a robust step out of a heavy wooden plank which got smashed up too thankfully it saved the back. The bike tow bar bit got bent but hopefully this plus the metal step support inflicted damage to the low lifes car who said it "Zis ees not important" after he'd hit me at red lights then drove off. We will now be asking a friend to make a metal F*** off step & as our van didnt have its step we never knew what it had looked like so those pics are invaluable too!
Am looking forward to seeing finished van.

Regards
Fiona

Thanks Fiona, Im glad those rear light lenses were good for you, they were a steal at that price. I bought 2 new ones myself and payed much more than that!

Im really pleased that my thread is helping others to maintain there CI"s, as they all have the same issues, its a wonder there is still so many of them around (not that you see them on the road tho).

Anyhow, Im pleased to say that the new corner piece i bought fits well.

Image

All the skirt bits inc the wheel arch and rear light holders were originally pop riveted together, but to make a tidier job and in case they needed to come off, i used M4 coach bolts instead.

Image

On the home straight now, some filler to all the dents and dings around the van, mostly to the rear tho.

Image

Then apply the top coat to the rear

Image
Image
Image

I wasnt happy with the colour when i was applying it ,as it looked white to me. But as the sun went in you could tell it was grey, so i think i like it  O well i bought it now :!:

Ive prepped the rest of the van but never had enough time left to get the paint on, and i have to make sure its gonna stay dry as its oil based and takes hours to dry.

Roll on next weekend lets see its done.

Id never have thought of doing a van as old as ours that colour but it looks great, really works well.
What will you do about the joins/seams where roof joins sides etc? Will be interested in this. Mine was covered in that silver bitumen lined stuff when i bought it 5 years ago & it still leaked was an awful job scraping & cleaning it off. 1st year i made the mistake of resealing it in silicone which didnt last long so following year i redid seams with sikoflex that caravan boat sealant.Ive never been brave enough to take all the trim off but instead clean trim, mask tape either side & then sikoflex over it. Its white so looks ok & it does the job & also trims still there if i change my mind or win the lottery & pay you to do it properly!!!
The seam across the roof where fibreglass luton dome meets aluminium roof ive replaced with sikoflex too.I do this each year to make sure its watertight. I'll look into topping it with tape & painting it with that roof sealant you used.
Also used lots of sikoflex to rebed in & seal all luton windows.
What about that ridiculous gutter bit on luton under windows above the front aluminium panel? it sits full of water up to join so i filled it with bodyfiller, painted it x3 then sikoflexed it at front & back edge to keep water out. seams to work.friend has a gargoyle style pipe off front corners of this gutter to keep rain off windscreen.
Looking forward to next stage :D

That alu trim on the roof shouldnt give me any more trouble, but to be on the safe side when i used the resin based sealer on the roof i painted over them trims as well, as photo.

Yes that gutter piece does hold water on the luton, but again i painted it all with Evercryl, so it can hold as much water as it likes now, it wont leak.

I am actually thinking of painting the roof again, my neighbour bought some for his garage roof and bought too much, so i might relieve him of it! Trouble is tho its black.

All the rest of the alu trims around the body and windows ive bought a grey infill strip to cover up the screw heads, this will make it much tidier.

I used Dulux Weathershield gloss that i had mixed up, it is quite runny anyhow so no need to thin it down. The primer was a solvent based automotive primer called Re-paint, i had to thin that down almost 50/50.

Thanks, Perfect weather for painting this weekend, especially gloss paint.
I had prepped the body last week, so except for a few runs that needed rubbing out i was good to go.

Image

Image

And for the other side

Image

I got the hang of the gloss painting now, i used a 4in lint free gloss roller from wilkinson to apply the paint, as it hold more paint, then used a normal gloss roller to go over that and even it all out.

You still get bubbles tho, even with the gloss paint. So i painted one area about 2ft square, then painted another area, buy this time i went back on the first area and gently rollered over the top, but only using the weight of the roller, no more. This flattened out any bubbles.

The only downside, was the flys sticking to the paint, but i just left them untill it was dry.

The next day everything was dry, so i could start on fitting back some trim

I started with the infill strips to the window frames.

Image

Image

Image

Then the rear corner bumpers and mouldings and license plate

Image

Image

Image

The nearside corner moulding was missing, so i had to make one from plywood using the other one as a template.

Image
Image

Time to fit the plastic body moulding that i repaired.

Image

I still cant beleave i managed to salvage it, as it was in about 15 pieces when i removed it.

Image

Image

As you can see i fitted the lower body trim as well.

Some more window beading

Image

I manage to find a used fridge vent grill to match the other one, notice the repair to the lower corner, notch much i could do with this as it was pretty badly bent up.

Image

Finished all the beading trim now

Image
Image
Image

That was money well spent.

Ive still got the lower skirt to paint yet.

Image

But looking good 8) 8)

Image

Image

Image

So, im still waiting for the blue paint to finish off the cab, theve run out of pigment to make the colour :(
Ive been promised it by the end of this week, if so, i can crack on with the cab.
