Wee update.

Something that was done earlier - I had that electrical problem, lights out on the dashboard and tacho, battery not charging and leaving me with non starting Lola.... Yeah, what's new... Thanks to AndyG that's sorted now.










I wanted to deal with the brakes and the bearing, but firstly I didn't have time during the week and secondly I didn't find the balls to deal with it yet I know, I know... I just need to get angry again and it will be done

So I started on the rust. The end of gaffa tape... Forgot to take "before" picture, but here you can see it at the last Essex meet,



Let's cut it all out My favourite power tool was very busy... so here we go - two cutting discs and one grinding disc later.

get rid of that orrible rust... stick new panels on... then she'll be good for another 10 years..... .....yeay.... ...

I think one of the ways to make a Transit body last is the waxoil/rust proofing that some people use....
Are you going down that route after you put new panels on?

Yes Dachre, I'll have no other choice. Since I've decided I'm doing it properly - I will need to put the underseal on. It seems to be the only thing holding it together down there I thought I didn't have that much rust, but as I grinded the inner side of the box away, parts of the thick steel thingy back there has fallen apart too. There is no steel left, just very thick layer of underseal I just have to decide if I want to try structural welding too, or I'll call a professional for that...

No point in paying people to do the work when you are more than capable to do the work yourself.

I think all Transit go in that area...... mine did...

There's no difference between welding jobs on the chassis/floor of the van when it comes to structural/non structural joints. Just most people will use slightly thicker steel for structural use. It should all be 100% welds, no worries.

It's the bit the mud flap is attached to. Not sure what it is, only started to look into it. That's how it fallen apart, but I think if I dig into it, it will go further There is about 2mm layer of underseal which was holding it together.

Also this bit will come off with the floor. Luckily it's just that corner that seems to be so bad. I cleaned the rest of it from underneath and it looks solid. What is this thing supposed to be for?

I think the bit you are poking is a strengthening panel that supports the other panels that have rusted away..

All of that rusted area will need to be renewed. Although the actual Transit floor looks ok from the photos which is really good.

You can buy all of those replacement sections/panels or you can make them up out of sheet steel.

I made all of those parts up myself, and i used thicker steel then the Transit originals in the hope that they will last longer.

But that area is one of the usual rust problems. A lot of people have posted there re-welding of the panels in that area in their build progress..... Me and Inty are just a few.... ...

Its a really good feeling when all that rust has been taken out and the new panels have been put back in and painted.... It means that you have your camper for years to come.

AlanN - don't poke the tiger with your bare foot... Are we ever absolutely SURE of anythig with MK5s??? Too much work has gone into her already and it's not actually that bad back there. There are definitely worse here...
