Is the timber frame still intact? Usually they have rotted away and the best thing to do is peel the ally back and renew the timber.

Keep up the good work mate :D

the timber itself appears to be in reasonable nick the problem is the screws and nails holding it all together have rotted  plus the wonderfull electrolytic corrosion  where you get different metals in contact hence the holes where all the fixings are (were) as for replacing timber well me and wood dont get on to well together  but if any needs replacing will have to be done from inside as if you start bending the ally skin about you have very little chance of it going back without buckling as the side panels are ribbed but what the he** i can still turn it into a flat bed if it all gets too much but that option is diminishing as work progresses

fixed the gas door used longer screws to get through to good timber now have the back painted (took the ladder off as it wasnt doing anything and was in the way for painting)also almost all of the drivers side again some of the paint has come out ok but have a couple of sags in it and as i was taking off the masking a piece of paper stuck to the fresh paint but i think i can cover the damage with a gb or ecosse sticker  so i suppose its been 2 steps forward and only 2 steps back :D

ps still no batteries in the camera so no pics :(

its not a BODGE  i will flat back first to ensure no lumps under the sticker  but anyhoo today hasnt been very productive had another look at the gas bottle door (BIG MISTAKE )  one side and the bottom disintegrated so that will mean letting in new timber but on a positive note the cooker works and the fridge :D just right for the beers  but unsure about the heater and the boiler oh and the water pump leaks (camper not engine) also havent got any batteries for the camera yet so still no more pics

friday the 13th what a wonderfull day :D iwas outside spuddling with the camper putting down vinyl tiles on the floor  when some guy turns up and said he had seen me working on the van and would i like these producing a water pump and a boiler :o :o :o "oh yes please says i" "well here you are then it gets them out of my way" so the pump is in and running but the boiler is mains only so will wait and see how the gas one works out :D :D :D oh and while clambering around in the wardrobe fitting the new pump found some odd bits of timber which with a bit of fiddling will repair the gas door :D :D :D

have found the problem with the boiler (well one at least) the pilot jet is blocked so have to search to see if and where i can find one so for a change decided to start sprucing up the wheels  so fire up the impact wrench and bugger! the nuts wont budge (mind you its only a cheapo wrench) so stick the wheel brace on and bugger! the brace flies off when trying to stand on it so what to do now well my big 3/4 socket set is at my mates workshop  so thats that idea stuffed so have a look about and eye up some blocks waiting to be used for something so  block up the outer end of the brace and stamp on the bar :D :D :D yippie it works only five more to go so after over an hour finally get the the wheel off so fire up the angle grinder and strip off the old paint and rust so after another hour thats the wheel cleaned up and me with backache so a quick wipe with thinners and blow it over silver wohoo shiny silver wheel :D and some of the tyre  didnt bother to mask as the tyre already has overspray from the body but if the tyre was clean would have painted it with liquid soap then washed it off after the paint was dry (in my opinion quicker and easier than masking tape)
ttfn glenn
trouble is still got the rest of the wheels to do mind you im not bothering with the rear inners   and the spare is going to need both sides doing  if i bother to do it at all

well its on the road now and starting to get used the first trial did not go well set off and got about 500 yards and the electronic ignition packed up so a quick bit of rewiring and away we went fine
till we hit the open road then it started pinking (bugger need to reset the timing) so heading home we hit the roundabout and as we start to turn off lots of horn blaring and there we are being forced round by some (********* ***********) foreign truck turning right from the left lane so finally got home (for some clean undies)
so there we were with the first run being a bit of a disaster still in the words of the song "things can only get better"
so now we were ready for test flight number2
fired the bus up and set of to the beach spent the day there with the kids rushing in and out of the sea and finishing up with a fish supper each then fired up and came home the only real concerns are above 55 it starts to get a bit noisy (must see about some insulation) but since the top speed seems to be about 65 it is all pretty academic
am tempted to do a bit of doorknocking as there are two smilies in the village laid up so if i can raise some funds will try and get in before the scrapman to source the parts for a diesel conversion

back in the world of the working now so hopfully can build up some funds to continue the tranny but this is going to be a real rolling restoration as i have to use it to get to work but funds will take a while to build up as the wifes sedona has gone pear shaped at the moment and am in the middle of a new kitchen but any how running the van every day has shown up a few things the suspension has gotten smoother with use the engine is quieter after a service and as an experiment i put the front pressures up to 60 from 50 the steering is lighter (obviously) but also the van seems to track better with less rolling and wandering so will keep an eye on tyre wear in case it starts to wear down the center of the tyres
another problem is the gearbox the synchro on second is gone and on third is going so at some stage will be looking at a box change but at the moment cant have any downtime so will have to keep double de-clutching

latest episode of the ongoing saga of a nutter and his transit :?
well the rolling restoration has come to a stop :( as the van has come to a stop (well not quite but its only running on three, burnt valve?)but the local scrappy just got a pinto powered later van with mt75 so picked up the motor box and prop tonight (wohoo its a 205) :D but the trouble is they took it out with the gas axe  so the gearbox crosmember got chopped so will have to create a hybrid out of the center of the mt member and my old mk 2 one also the new prop is a two piece so may have to do a bit of prop manufacturing still off to the tech section to post a few questions ps they also axed through the gear stick

cracking up more like  havent really done much to it lately apart from hound it to and fro from work  well slowly anyway plus all the salt on the roads has played havoc with it so will probably keep pounding around in it till mot is due then pull it off the road and give it a blitz but am still not sure which way i am going to take with it but one update that has happened is a insulated bulkhead (looks like a patchwork quilt as i used lots of offcuts left over from insulating aircraft bits) but inspite of the looks it has made it a lot quieter inside and a touch warmer too

Aha!! so there is at least one other certifiable nutter trying to keep a mk2 tranny on the road. I have been right through this thread and it all makes me feel much better about myself (thought I was the only one :( ) Keep up the good work and check out MuttleyIII on this forum to see another rusty mk2 :!:
